Khutbah about Hajj, Khutbah about Dhul-Hijjah, Khutbah about the virtues of Dhul-Hijjah, Hajj, Dhul-Hijjah, Virtues of Dhul-Hijjah
First Khutbah
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is for God. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in God from the evils of ourselves and from our misdeeds. Whomever God guides, none can misguide. And God whomever misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except God and I bear witness that Mohammad is His prophet and messenger. Allah the Exalted says:
{O you who believe! Fear God as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam} [Al-Imran 102].
Dear brothers and sisters,
Here are some of the virtues of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. The month of Dhul-Hijjah started last Friday, and today is the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah.
Allah Exalted says in Qur’an:
{والفجر وليال عشر}
{By the dawn, and by the 10 nights} [Surah 89, 1-2]. Ibn ‘Abbas said that these ten nights which Allah swore by are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
Indeed, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are the best days of the year in the sight of Allah. As mentioned in hadith, Allah has favored these days and multiplied their reward.
Ibn Abbas -may Allah be pleased with them- reported that the Messenger of Allah -prayer and peace be upon him- said: “There are no days in which righteous deed is more liked to Allah than these ten days (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah).” The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, not even fighting (jihad) for the sake of God?” He replied: “Not even fighting (jihad) for the sake of God, except for a man who goes out for Jihad with himself and his money then does not return with any of that.” Related by Al-Bukhari.
Why are the first ten days of Dhul –Hijjah so special?
There is no other time when all forms of worship are combined at one time like in these ten days. Best deeds during these days include: Prayer, fasting, Dhikr, sacrifice, and Hajj.
As for the Prayer, the reward of the Five Daily Prayers and other voluntary prayers is multiplied during these days.
As for fasting, fasting these days has great reward. And fasting the Day of Arafah (which is tomorrow) wipes the sins of two years; the current year and the next year.
Narrated Abu Qatadah -may Allah be pleased with him- that the Messenger of Allah -prayer and peace be upon him- was asked about fasting the day of `Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah). He replied: “Fasting this day forgives the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” Related by Imam Muslim.
—
As for Dhikr, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم urged us to mention Allah frequently during these great days.
Narrated Ibn Abbas -may Allah be pleased with them- that the Messenger of Allah -prayer and peace be upon him- said: “There are no days better with God, nor in which righteous deed is more liked to God than these days (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Thul-Hijjah), so say abundantly in them: Subhana-Allah (Glory be to God), Al-hamdul li Allah (Praise be to God), la ilaha illa Allah (there is no god worthy of worship except Allah), and Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest).” Related by Al-Tabarani.
—
As for sacrifice, then on Eid Al-Adha or Qurbani Eid (Sunday), Prophet Muhammad slaughtered two male sheep for the sake of Allah.
Anas reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) sacrificed with his own hands two horned rams which were white with black markings, reciting the name of Allah and glorifying Him (saying Allah-o-Akbar). He placed his foot on their sides (while sacrificing). Related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
—
And finally, these days are the days of Hajj, which start on 8th and end on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and every Muslim must perform at least once in his lifetime. The reward of an accepted Hajj is forgiveness of all sins and Paradise.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “The performance of ‘Umrah to Umrah forgives all sins committed between them. And the reward of Hajj Mabroor (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing save Paradise.” Related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Thus, we see how great these days are and why they are favored by Allah. We ask Allah to accept our good deeds and forgive our sins.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Dear Brothers and sisters,
Know that tomorrow is the Day of Arafah, 9th Dhul Hijjah and it is a great day with Allah in which Allah frees many slaves from Hell-fire as mentioned in the following hadith:
Narrated Aishah -may Allah be pleased with her- that the Messenger of Allah -prayer and peace be upon him- said: “There is no day in which God frees slaves from Hell-Fire more than the Day of Arafah (i.e., 9th Dhul Hijjah). And He gets close and appears, then boasts of them to His angels and says: ‘What did they want?’ ” And in another narration: ” ‘My angels, be My witness that I have forgiven them.’ ” Related by Imam Muslim, Al-Nisaa’i, and Ibn Majah.
—
Moreover, the Day of Arafah is a blessed for the Muslims because it is the Day in which Allah completed the deen of Islam and perfected His bounty.
Tariq bin Shihab said, “A Jewish man said to `Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you, had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day as a day of celebration.’ Umar Ibn Al-Khattab asked, `Which verse is that?’
The Jewish man replied: “ { اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم وأتممت عليكم نعمتي ورضيت لكم الإسلام دينا} {This day, I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have chosen Islam as a religion for you} [Surah 5, verse 3].”
Umar replied, “By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah. It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday.” Related by Imam Ahmad.
To show appreciation for the greatness of these days and to respond to Allah’s command to make takbeer during these days, the scholars said we need to make takbeer after every prayer starting 9th Dhul-Hijjah until the 13th Dhul Hijjah. So after every prayer during these five days we have to read takbeer:
—
And Sunday is Eid day in which we pray Eid and then sacrifice for Allah’s sake. We ask Allah the Exalted to guide us to do righteous, to accept our good deeds, to forgive us our sins and free us from Hell-fire.
{إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا}
{Allah sends Prayer and Blessings on the Prophet (Muhammad), and His angels also do so. O you who believe, send your prayer and blessings on him (Muhammad), and salute him with all respect} (Surah 33, verse 56).
{إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ}
Allah -the Exalted- says: {Verily, Allah orders justice, kindness, and giving to the relatives, and He forbids immoral sins, evil and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you may take heed} (Surah 16, verse 90).
