Short and steady — the plain meaning, with the reports that bear on it and little else.

Al-Māʾidah 5:71 Juzʾ 6 Page 120

‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏

And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

وَقَوله: ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ أَي: عَذَاب ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ يَعْنِي: عموا وصموا بعد مُوسَى، ثمَّ تَابَ الله عَلَيْهِم؛ ببعث عِيسَى، ﴿ثمَّ عموا وصموا كثيرا مِنْهُم﴾ بالْكفْر بِمُحَمد ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ .
