بحر العلوم Al-Samarqandī أبو الليث السمرقندي (ت ٣٧٣ هـ) One of the earliest. The plain sense, then the main opinions. الوجيز Al-Wāḥidī أبو الحسن الواحدي (ت ٤٦٨ هـ) The short one of his three — a line or two on each ayah. In this edition: Sūrahs 1–12 تفسير القرآن Al-Samʿānī أبو المظفر السمعاني (ت ٤٨٩ هـ) Short and steady — the plain meaning and the reports behind it. جامع البيان Al-Ṭabarī ابن جرير الطبري (ت ٣١٠ هـ) The earliest complete tafsīr, with the chain for every report. تفسير ابن أبي حاتم Ibn Abī Ḥātim ابن أبي حاتم الرازي (ت ٣٢٧ هـ) What the Companions and their followers said, with the chains. In this edition: Sūrahs 1–13, 23–29 تفسير القرآن العزيز Ibn Abī Zamanīn ابن أبي زمنين الأندلسي (ت ٣٩٩ هـ) Yaḥyā ibn Sallām’s early commentary, abridged by an Andalusian Mālikī. الكشف والبيان Al-Thaʿlabī أبو إسحاق الثعلبي (ت ٤٢٧ هـ) The wide narrated commentary al-Baghawī later abridged: reports, language, stories. معالم التنزيل Al-Baghawī الحسين بن مسعود البغوي (ت ٥١٦ هـ) Plain and narration-based; the easiest to read straight through. الدر المنثور Al-Suyūṭī جلال الدين السيوطي (ت ٩١١ هـ) Transmitted reports and nothing else, gathered verse by verse.

مفاتيح الغيب Al-Rāzī فخر الدين الرازي (ت ٦٠٦ هـ) Long and searching: the hardest questions, worked through. نظم الدرر Al-Biqāʿī برهان الدين البقاعي (ت ٨٨٥ هـ) Reads the Qur’an as one whole — why this verse follows that. إرشاد العقل السليم Abū al-Suʿūd أبو السعود العمادي (ت ٩٨٢ هـ) Ottoman and elegant, attentive to why the words fall as they do. روح المعاني Al-Ālūsī شهاب الدين الآلوسي (ت ١٢٧٠ هـ) The whole tradition on a verse, closing with its spiritual reading. التحرير والتنوير Ibn ʿĀshūr محمد الطاهر بن عاشور (ت ١٣٩٣ هـ) Modern in idiom, classical in method.
