On turning over or waking in the night, when sleep will not come, after a fright or a dream, and on rising to pray.

  1. On waking in the night

Lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa subḥāna-llāh, wa lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa-llāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. Praise belongs to Allah; glory be to Allah; there is no god but Allah; Allah is greatest; and there is no might and no power except by Allah.

  2. On turning over in the night

    Lā ilāha illa-llāhu-l-wāḥidu-l-qahhār, rabbu-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi wa mā baynahuma-l-ʿazīzu-l-ghaffār.

There is no god but Allah, the One, the All-Compelling, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the Ever-Forgiving.

What he ﷺ said when he turned over in the night.

    Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 5530 · al-Mustadrak 1980
  3. Increase me in knowledge

Lā ilāha illā anta subchānaka, Allāhumma astaghfiruka li-dhanbī wa asʾaluka raḥmatak. Allāhumma zidnī ʿilman wa lā tuzigh qalbī baʿda idh hadaytanī, wa hab lī min ladunka raḥmah, innaka anta-l-wahhāb.

There is no god but You, glory be to You. O Allah, I ask Your forgiveness for my sin and I ask You for Your mercy. O Allah, increase me in knowledge, and do not let my heart deviate after You have guided me, and grant me mercy from Yourself — You are the Ever-Giving.

What he ﷺ said when he woke in the night.

  4. On going back to bed

Bi-smika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī, wa bika arfaʿuh, fa-in amsakta nafsī fa-rḥamhā, wa in arsaltahā fa-ḥfaẓhā bi-mā taḥfaẓu bihi ʿibādaka-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You send it back, guard it with that by which You guard Your righteous servants.

If you get up from your bed and then return to it, dust it three times with the edge of your garment first.

  5. The eyes have slept

    Nāmati-l-ʿuyūn, wa ghārati-n-nujūm, wa anta-l-ḥayyu-l-qayyūm.

Eyes have slept and the stars have set, and You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all.

What Abū ad-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) said when he rose in the depth of the night.

  6. Stirring in the night

    ×10

    Bismi-llāh — subḥāna-llāh — āmantu billāhi wa kafartu bi-ṭ-ṭāghūt.

In the name of Allah — glory be to Allah — I believe in Allah and reject every false god.

He is protected from everything he fears, and no sin can reach him until the next time he says it.

Each of the three, ten times, when you stir in the night.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ 9017
  7. When sleep will not come

Allāhumma rabba-s-samāwāti-s-sabʿi wa mā aẓallat, wa rabba-l-araḍīna wa mā aqallat, wa rabba-sh-shayāṭīni wa mā aḍallat, kun lī jāran min sharri khalqika kullihim jamīʿā, an yafruṭa ʿalayya aḥadun minhum aw an yabghiya ʿalayy. ʿAzza jāruk, wa jalla thanāʾuk, wa lā ilāha ghayruk, wa lā ilāha illā ant.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the earths and all they carry, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray: be my protector against the evil of all Your creation, lest any of them should wrong me or transgress against me. Mighty is the one You protect, exalted is Your praise; there is no god besides You, there is no god but You.

Taught to Khālid ibn al-Walīd when he complained that he could not sleep.

  8. On a fright in sleep

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmati min ghaḍabihi wa sharri ʿibādihi wa min hamazāti-sh-shayāṭīni wa an yaḥḍurūn.

I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, from the evil of His servants, from the promptings of the devils and from their coming near me.

  9. Against the plots of the devils

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmāti-llatī lā yujāwizuhunna barrun wa lā fājir, min sharri mā khalaqa wa dharaʾa wa baraʾ, wa min sharri mā yanzilu mina-s-samāʾ, wa min sharri mā yaʿruju fīhā, wa min sharri mā dharaʾa fi-l-arḍ, wa min sharri mā yakhruju minhā, wa min sharri fitani-l-layli wa-n-nahār, wa min sharri kulli ṭāriqin illā ṭāriqan yaṭruqu bi-khayr, yā Raḥmān.

I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can pass beyond, from the evil of all He has created, scattered and brought into being; from the evil of what comes down from the sky and what rises up into it; from the evil of what He has spread in the earth and what comes out of it; from the evil of the trials of the night and the day; and from the evil of everything that knocks — except one that knocks with good, O Most Merciful.

Jibrīl taught it to the Prophet ﷺ on the night the devils came at him with a flame of fire; he said it, and their fire went out.

    Musnad Aḥmad 15461
  10. After a good dream

    Al-ḥamdu lillāh.

    Praise belongs to Allah.

A good dream is from Allah: praise Him for it, and tell it to those you love.

  11. After a bad dream

    ×3

    Aʿūdhu billāhi mina-sh-shayṭān.

I take refuge in Allah from Satan.

Spit lightly to your left three times, seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the dream’s evil three times, and turn onto your other side. Tell it to no one: it will not harm you.

  12. From the work of Satan

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿamali-sh-shayṭān, wa sayyiʾāti-l-aḥlām.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from the work of Satan and from evil dreams.

Said after spitting lightly to the left three times.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah
  13. To one who tells you a dream

    Khayran raʾayta, wa khayran yakūn.

You have seen good, and good it will be.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers. Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous. Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise." And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allah, and Allah has with Him the best reward." Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land. [It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place. But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allah. And that which is with Allah is best for the righteous. And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account. O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful. Āl ʿImrān 3:190–200

Allāhumma rabba sayyidinā Jibrāʾīla wa sayyidinā Mīkāʾīla wa sayyidinā Isrāfīl, fāṭira-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, ʿālima-l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādah, anta taḥkumu bayna ʿibādika fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn. Ihdinī li-mā-khtulifa fīhi mina-l-ḥaqqi bi-idhnik, innaka tahdī man tashāʾu ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm.

O Allah, Lord of Sayyidinā Jibrīl, Sayyidinā Mīkāʾīl and Sayyidinā Isrāfīl, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen — You judge between Your servants concerning that in which they differed. Guide me, by Your leave, to the truth in what is disputed. You guide whom You will to a straight path.

How he ﷺ opened his prayer when he rose at night.

  16. You are the Truth

Allāhumma laka-l-ḥamdu, anta qayyimu-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi wa man fīhinn, wa laka-l-ḥamd, laka mulku-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi wa man fīhinn, wa laka-l-ḥamd, anta nūru-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, wa laka-l-ḥamd, anta-l-ḥaqq, wa waʿduka-l-ḥaqq, wa liqāʾuka ḥaqq, wa qawluka ḥaqq, wa-l-jannatu ḥaqq, wa-n-nāru ḥaqq, wa-n-nabiyyūna ḥaqq, wa sayyidunā Muḥammadun ﷺ ḥaqq, wa-s-sāʿatu ḥaqq. Allāhumma laka aslamt, wa bika āmant, wa ʿalayka tawakkalt, wa ilayka anabt, wa bika khāṣamt, wa ilayka ḥākamt, fa-ghfir lī mā qaddamtu wa mā akhkhart, wa mā asrartu wa mā aʿlant, anta-l-muqaddimu wa anta-l-muʾakhkhir, lā ilāha illā ant.

O Allah, Yours is the praise: You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all who are in them. Yours is the praise: Yours is the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all who are in them. Yours is the praise: You are the Light of the heavens and the earth. Yours is the praise: You are the Truth, Your promise is true, meeting You is true, Your word is true, the Garden is true, the Fire is true, the prophets are true, Sayyidunā Muhammad ﷺ is true, and the Hour is true. O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I believe, on You I rely, to You I turn, by You I contend, and to You I bring my case for judgement. So forgive me what I have done before and what I have left undone, what I have hidden and what I have shown. You bring forward and You put back; there is no god but You.

What he ﷺ said when he rose at night to pray.

  17. From the narrowness of the standing

    Allāhumma-ghfir lī wa-hdinī wa-rzuqnī wa ʿāfinī. Aʿūdhu billāhi min ḍīqi-l-maqāmi yawma-l-qiyāmah.

O Allah, forgive me, guide me, provide for me and grant me well-being. I take refuge in Allah from the narrowness of the standing on the Day of Rising.
