Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."

Ar-Raʿd 13:28

What he ﷺ said on a journey — leaving, riding, climbing, stopping for the night, and coming back. A traveller’s supplication is answered; these are the words the sunnah puts in that mouth.

Setting out

Said as you mount, or as the car starts.

  1. 1

    On setting out

Subḥāna-lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn. Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādha-l-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa mina-l-ʿamali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā waṭwi ʿannā buʿdah. Allāhumma anta-ṣ-ṣāḥibu fi-s-safar, wa-l-khalīfatu fi-l-ahl.

Glory to Him who subjected this to us, and we could never have done it ourselves; and to our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey of ours easy, and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind.

Say Allāhu akbar three times before it.

  2. 2

You are the Companion on the road

    Allāhumma anta-ṣ-ṣāḥibu fi-s-safar, wa-l-khalīfatu fi-l-ahl. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāʾi-s-safar, wa kaʾābati-l-munqalab, wa sūʾi-l-manẓari fi-l-ahli wa-l-māl.

O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind. O Allah, I take refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a sorrowful return, and from finding some evil in my family or my property when I come back.

  3. 3

    Saying goodbye to a traveller

Astawdiʿu-llāha dīnaka, wa amānataka, wa khawātīma ʿamalik.

I place in Allah’s keeping your religion, what has been entrusted to you, and the last of your deeds.

What Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما would say to anyone leaving, because it is what the Prophet ﷺ said to him.

  4. 4

And what the traveller is wished

Zawwadaka-llāhu-t-taqwā, wa ghafara dhanbaka, wa yassara laka-l-khayra ḥaythumā kunt.

May Allah provision you with piety, forgive your sin, and make good easy for you wherever you are.

On the road

  1. 5

    Going up, and going down

Allāhu akbar — going up. Subḥāna-llāh — going down.

Allah is greatest, when climbing. Glory be to Allah, when descending.

Jābir رضي الله عنه: this is what the Companions did on every rise and every fall of the road.

  2. 6

When dawn breaks on a journey

Sammaʿa sāmiʿun bi-ḥamdi-llāhi wa ḥusni balāʾihi ʿalaynā. Rabbanā ṣāḥibnā wa afḍil ʿalaynā, ʿāʾidhan bi-llāhi mina-n-nār.

Let a witness bear witness to our praise of Allah and to His goodly trial of us. Our Lord, keep our company and be generous to us — seeking refuge in Allah from the Fire.

  3. 7

When you stop somewhere for the night

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

Nothing will harm him until he moves on from that place.

  4. 8

    On coming to a town

Allāhumma rabba-s-samāwāti-s-sabʿi wa mā aẓlaln, wa rabba-l-araḍīna-s-sabʿi wa mā aqlaln, wa rabba-sh-shayāṭīni wa mā aḍlaln, wa rabba-r-riyāḥi wa mā dharayn. Asʾaluka khayra hādhihi-l-qaryati wa khayra ahlihā, wa khayra mā fīhā, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri ahlihā, wa sharri mā fīhā.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they carry, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray, Lord of the winds and all they scatter: I ask You for the good of this town and the good of its people and the good of what is in it, and I take refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it.

    An-Nasāʾī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Layla — al-Ḥākim graded it ṣaḥīḥ
  5. 9

If you fear a people on the road

O Allah, we place You before them, and we take refuge in You from their evil.

Coming home

  1. 10

    On the way back

    Āyibūna tāʾibūna ʿābidūna li-rabbinā ḥāmidūn.

Returning, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord.

He ﷺ said it on the way back from every journey, adding it to the words of setting out.
