Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

480 adhkār in 23 sets

Clouds, wind and rain, asking for rain, thunder, eclipses and shooting stars, and the sounds of the night.

  1. On seeing clouds gather

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from its evil.

When a cloud rose on the horizon he ﷺ would leave what he was doing, even a prayer, and say this.

  2. When the wind blows hard

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahā wa khayra mā fīhā wa khayra mā ursilat bih, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā fīhā wa sharri mā ursilat bih.

O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good in it and the good it was sent with; and I take refuge in You from its evil, the evil in it and the evil it was sent with.

  3. When the wind brings what you dislike

O Allah, we ask You for the good of this wind, the good in it and the good it was commanded with; and we take refuge in You from the evil of this wind, the evil in it and the evil it was commanded with.

“Do not curse the wind. The wind is from the mercy of Allah; it brings mercy, and it brings punishment.”

  4. A wind that brings life

    Allāhumma laqḥan lā ʿaqīmā.

O Allah, let it be fruitful, not barren.

What he ﷺ said when the wind grew strong.

    Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 1008
  5. Let it be mercy, not punishment

Allāhumma-jʿalhā raḥmatan wa lā tajʿalhā ʿadhābā. Allāhumma-jʿalhā riyāḥan wa lā tajʿalhā rīḥā.

O Allah, make it a mercy, and do not make it a punishment. O Allah, make it winds of mercy, and do not make it a wind of ruin.

He ﷺ would face the wind, kneel, stretch out his hands and say this.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 11533
  6. When a dark wind rises

Say “Allāhu akbar” — it clears away the black dust.

For a dark storm of wind, or any great and terrible thing.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 284
  7. When it rains

    Ṣayyiban nāfiʿā.

    A beneficial downpour.

  8. A wholesome downpour

    Allāhumma ṣayyiban hanīʾā.

    O Allah, a wholesome downpour.

  9. After the rain

    Muṭirnā bi-faḍli-llāhi wa raḥmatih.

We have been given rain by the grace of Allah and His mercy.

Allah says of the one who says this: “My servant believes in Me, and disbelieves in the stars.”

  10. When there is too much rain

Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā ʿalaynā. Allāhumma ʿala-l-ākāmi wa-ẓ-ẓirābi wa buṭūni-l-awdiyati wa manābiti-sh-shajar.

O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, upon the hills and the high ground, the valley floors and the places where trees grow.

  11. Asking for rain: relieve us

Allāhumma aghithnā, Allāhumma aghithnā, Allāhumma aghithnā.

O Allah, relieve us with rain. O Allah, relieve us with rain. O Allah, relieve us with rain.

What he ﷺ said, raising his hands on the minbar during the Friday khuṭbah, when a man complained of the drought.

  12. Asking for rain: give us water

    Allāhumma-sqinā, Allāhumma-sqinā, Allāhumma-sqinā.

O Allah, give us rain. O Allah, give us rain. O Allah, give us rain.

  13. Rain that brings relief

Allāhumma-sqinā ghaythan mughīthan marīʾan marīʿan nāfiʿan ghayra ḍārr, ʿājilan ghayra ājil.

O Allah, give us rain that relieves, wholesome and bringing growth, beneficial and not harmful, soon and not late.

  14. Water Your servants and Your creatures

Allāhumma-sqi ʿibādaka wa bahāʾimak, wa-nshur raḥmatak, wa aḥyi baladaka-l-mayyit.

O Allah, give water to Your servants and Your animals, spread Your mercy, and bring Your dead land to life.

  15. The prayer for rain

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi-l-ʿālamīn, ar-raḥmāni-r-raḥīm, maliki yawmi-d-dīn. Lā ilāha illa-llāhu yafʿalu mā yurīd. Allāhumma anta-llāhu lā ilāha illā ant, al-ghaniyyu wa naḥnu-l-fuqarāʾ. Anzil ʿalayna-l-ghayth, wa-jʿal mā anzalta lanā quwwatan wa balāghan ilā ḥīn.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds — The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. There is no god but Allah; He does what He wills. O Allah, You are Allah, there is no god but You; You are the Rich and we are the poor. Send down rain upon us, and make what You send down a strength for us and a provision for a while.

What he ﷺ said on the minbar in the prayer-ground, after the people had complained of the drought.

  16. Through the Prophet’s uncle ﷺ

Allāhumma innā kunnā natawassalu ilayka bi-nabiyyinā ﷺ fa-tasqīnā, wa innā natawassalu ilayka bi-ʿammi nabiyyinā ﷺ fa-sqinā.

O Allah, we used to seek nearness to You through our Prophet ﷺ and You gave us rain; now we seek nearness to You through the uncle of our Prophet ﷺ, so give us rain.

Sayyidunā ʿUmar’s prayer when drought came, asking for rain through al-ʿAbbās — and they were given rain.

  17. On hearing thunder

    Subḥāna-lladhī yusabbiḥu-r-raʿdu bi-ḥamdihi wa-l-malāʾikatu min khīfatih.

Glory be to Him — “the thunder exalts Allah with praise of Him — and the angels as well from fear of Him.”

ʿAbdullāh ibn az-Zubayr رضي الله عنهما would stop talking when he heard thunder and say this.

  18. Thunder and thunderbolts

Allāhumma lā taqtulnā bi-ghaḍabik, wa lā tuhliknā bi-ʿadhābik, wa ʿāfinā qabla dhālik.

O Allah, do not kill us with Your anger, do not destroy us with Your punishment, and keep us safe before that.

    Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3450 · al-Ḥākim, al-Mustadrak 7772
  19. When a star shoots

Mā shāʾa-llāh, lā quwwata illā billāh.

What Allah willed has occurred; there is no power except in Allah

ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd: “We were told not to follow a shooting star with our eyes, and to say this.”

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 653
  20. At an eclipse

Call on Allah, say Allāhu akbar, pray, and give in charity.

“The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they are not eclipsed for anyone’s death or life.” At such a sign, hasten to remember Him, call on Him and ask His forgiveness.

  21. Looking at the moon

Seek refuge in Allah from its evil.

He ﷺ looked at the moon and told Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah to seek refuge in Allah from its evil, “for it is the darkness when it settles”.

  22. When a rooster crows

Ask Allah of His bounty — it has seen an angel.

  23. When a donkey brays, or dogs bark at night

Seek refuge in Allah from Satan — they see what you do not see.

  24. On seeing a fire

Say “Allāhu akbar” — takbīr puts it out.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 295
