Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."

Ar-Raʿd 13:28

377 adhkār in 12 sets

What to say over your own pain, at a sick person’s bedside, and when someone dies. Nothing here is a formula for a hard day; each of these is a thing he ﷺ said or taught at exactly that moment.

Over your own pain

  1. 1

    A hand where it hurts

    ×7

Bismillāh — three times. Then: Aʿūdhu bi-ʿizzati-llāhi wa qudratihi min sharri mā ajidu wa uḥādhir.

In the name of Allah — three times. Then: I take refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I find and what I fear.

Put your right hand on the place that hurts, say bismillāh three times, then these words seven.

  2. 2

    When it will not lift

Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūmu bi-raḥmatika astaghīth.

O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all — by Your mercy I seek relief.

  3. 3

Forgive me and have mercy upon me

    Allāhumma’ghfir lī warḥamnī wa alḥiqnī bir-rafīqi ‘l-'A`alā.

O Allah, forgive me and have mercy upon me, and join me with the highest companions (in Paradise).

  4. 4

There is none worthy of worship but Allah

Lā ilāha illallāh wallāhu Akbar, lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdah, lā ilāha illallāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lā ilāha illallāh lahu ‘l-mulku wa lahu ‘l-ḥamd, lā ilāha illallāh wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

There is none worthy of worship but Allah, Allah is the Most Great. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, His is the dominion and His is the praise. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, there is no power and no might but by Allah.

    Ḥiṣn al-Muslim 152

At a sick person’s side

Said to them, or over them, sitting by their head.

  1. 5

No harm — a cleansing, if Allah wills

    Lā baʾsa, ṭahūrun in shāʾa-llāh.

No harm — a cleansing, if Allah wills.

  2. 6

    Take away the hurt

Adh-hibi-l-baʾasa rabba-n-nās, ishfi wa anta-sh-Shāfī, lā shifāʾa illā shifāʾuk, shifāʾan lā yughādiru saqamā.

Take away the hurt, Lord of mankind. Heal — and You are the Healer. There is no healing but Yours: a healing that leaves no illness behind.

He ﷺ would pass his right hand over the place and say it.

  3. 7

    Seven times, at the bedside

    ×7

    Asʾalu-llāha-l-ʿAẓīm, rabba-l-ʿarshi-l-ʿaẓīm, an yashfiyak.

I ask Allah the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you.

Whoever visits a sick person whose time has not come and says it seven times, Allah heals him of that illness.

When someone dies

  1. 8

    The last words

    Lā ilāha illa-llāh.

There is no god but Allah.

Whoever’s last words are “there is no god but Allah” enters the Garden.

Said gently beside them, so that they say it — not pressed on them.

  2. 9

    When the eyes are closed

Allāhumma-ghfir li-fulān, warfaʿ darajatahu fi-l-mahdiyyīn, wakhlufhu fī ʿaqibihi fi-l-ghābirīn, waghfir lanā wa lahu yā rabba-l-ʿālamīn, wafsaḥ lahu fī qabrihi wa nawwir lahu fīh.

O Allah, forgive so-and-so, raise his rank among the rightly guided, be a successor to those he leaves behind, forgive us and forgive him, Lord of the worlds, make his grave spacious for him and fill it with light.

He ﷺ said it over Abū Salamah رضي الله عنه when he closed his eyes.

  3. 10

    When the news reaches you

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Allāhumma ʾjurnī fī muṣībatī, wakhluf lī khayran minhā.

To Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me something better than it in its place.

Allah rewards him in his affliction and gives him something better in its place.

  4. 11

    In the funeral prayer

Allāhumma-ghfir lahu warḥamh, wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanh, wa akrim nuzulah, wa wassiʿ mudkhalah, waghsilhu bi-l-māʾi wa-th-thalji wa-l-barad, wa naqqihi mina-l-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta-th-thawba-l-abyaḍa mina-d-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhu-l-jannah, wa aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi-l-qabri wa min ʿadhābi-n-nār.

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him, honour his arrival and make his entry spacious, wash him with water and snow and hail, cleanse him of his errors as a white cloth is cleansed of dirt, exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family and his spouse for a better spouse, admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.

  5. 12

    At the graves

    As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla-d-diyāri mina-l-muʾminīna wa-l-muslimīn, wa innā in shāʾa-llāhu bikum lāḥiqūn. Nasʾalu-llāha lanā wa lakumu-l-ʿāfiyah.

Peace be upon you, people of these dwellings, believers and Muslims. We will, Allah willing, follow you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

He ﷺ taught them to say it whenever they went out to the graves.

  6. 13

    For all of them

Allāhumma-ghfir li-ḥayyinā wa mayyitinā, wa shāhidinā wa ghāʾibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allāhumma man aḥyaytahu minnā fa-aḥyihi ʿala-l-Islām, wa man tawaffaytahu minnā fa-tawaffahu ʿala-l-īmān.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us present and those absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam; and whoever of us You take, take him upon faith.

  7. 14

Instruction for the one nearing death

Lā ilāha illallāh Whoever dies with the last words (whose meaning is):"There is none worthy of worship but Allah" will enter Paradise.

  8. 15

Surely [name the person] is under Your protection

Allāhumma inna [name the person] fī dhimmatik, wa ḥabli jiwārik, faqihi min fitnati ‘l-qabri wa `adhābin-nār, wa anta ahlu ‘l-wafā'i wa ‘l-ḥaqq. Faghfir lahu warḥamh innaka anta ‘l-Ghafūrur-Raḥīm.

O Allah, surely [name the person] is under Your protection, and in the rope of Your security, so save him from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire. You fulfill promises and grant rights, so forgive him and have mercy on him. Surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

  9. 16

Your male slave and the child of Your female

Allāhumma `abduka wabnu 'amatik iḥtāja ilā raḥmatik, wa anta ghaniyyun `an `adhābih, in kāna muḥsinan fazid fī ḥasanātih, wa in kāna musī'an fatajāwaz `anh.

O Allah, Your male slave and the child of Your female slave is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of his torment. If he was pious then increase his rewards and if he was a transgressor then pardon him.

    Ḥiṣn al-Muslim 159
  10. 17

Protect him from the torment of the grave

Allāhumma a`idh’hu min `adhābi ‘l-qabr [or say:] Allāhumma ‘j`alhu faraṭan wa dhukhran liwālidayh, wa shafī`an mujāban. Allāhumma thaqqil bihi mawāzīnahumā wa a`ẓim bihi ujūrahumā, wa alḥiqhu biṣāliḥi ‘l-mu'minīn, waj`alhu fī kafālati Ibrāhīm, wa qihi biraḥmatika `adhāba ‘l-jaḥīm, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, Allāhumma’ghfir li aslāfinā wa afrāṭinā wa man sabaqanā bil īmān.

O Allah, protect him from the torment of the grave. [It is also good to say:] O Allah, make him a precursor, a forerunner and a treasure for his parents and an answered intercessor. O Allah, make him weigh heavily in their scales (of good) and magnify their reward. Make him join the righteous of the believers. Place him in the care of Ibrahim. Save him by Your mercy from the torment of Hell. Give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family. O Allah, forgive those who have gone (i.e. passed away) before us, our children lost (by death), and those who have preceded us in Faith.

    Ḥiṣn al-Muslim 160
  11. 18

Make him for us a precursor

Allāhumma’j`alhu lanā faraṭan, wa salafan, wa ajra.

O Allah, make him for us a precursor, a forerunner and a cause of reward.

    Ḥiṣn al-Muslim 161
  12. 19

    Condolence

Inna lillāhi mā akhadh, wa lahu mā a`tā, wa kullu shay'in `indahu bi ajalin musammā . . . faltaṣbir wa ‘l-taḥtasib . [Also good to say:] A`ẓamallāhu ajrak, wa 'aḥsana `azā'ak, wa ghafara limayyitik.

Surely, Allah takes what is His, and what He gives is His, and to all things He has appointed a time... so have patience and be rewarded.1 May Allah magnify your reward, and make perfect your bereavement, and forgive your departed.2

    Ḥiṣn al-Muslim 162
  13. 20

Placing the deceased in the grave

    Bismillāh wa `alā sunnati Rasūlillāh.

With the Name of Allah, and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

  14. 21

    After burying the deceased

    Allāhumma’ghfir lah Allāhumma thabbit’h.

O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, strengthen him.
