Entering and leaving the lavatory, and what is said before and after wuḍūʾ.

  1. Entering the lavatory

    Bismi-llāh. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina-l-khubuthi wa-l-khabāʾith.

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I take refuge in You from the evil ones, male and female.

“The screen between the eyes of the jinn and the nakedness of the children of Ādam, when one of them enters the lavatory, is that he says: bismi-llāh.”

Said before going in — or, in open country, before the clothing is raised.

  2. From the unclean one

    Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina-r-rijsi-n-najasi-l-khabīthi-l-mukhbithi-sh-shayṭāni-r-rajīm.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from the unclean, the impure, the foul one who makes foul: Satan the outcast.

    On entering the lavatory.

    Sunan Ibn Mājah 299 · Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 25
  3. Leaving the lavatory

    Ghufrānak.

    Your forgiveness, O Allah.

  4. Who took the harm away

    Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī adhhaba ʿanni-l-adhā wa ʿāfānī.

Praise be to Allah, who took the harm away from me and gave me well-being.

    On leaving the lavatory.

  5. Who let me taste its goodness

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī adhāqanī ladhdhatah, wa abqā fiyya quwwatah, wa adhhaba ʿannī adhāh.

Praise be to Allah, who let me taste its goodness, left its strength in me, and took its harm away from me.

    On leaving the lavatory.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 25
  6. Before wuḍūʾ

    Bismi-llāh.

    In the name of Allah.

“There is no wuḍūʾ for one who does not mention the name of Allah over it.” The same is said before ghusl and tayammum.

  7. During wuḍūʾ

Allāhumma-ghfir lī dhanbī, wa wassiʿ lī fī dārī, wa bārik lī fī rizqī.

O Allah, forgive me my sin, make my home spacious for me, and bless me in my provision.

Abū Mūsā heard him ﷺ say it while he made wuḍūʾ, and asked him about it. “Have they left anything out?”

    an-Nasāʾī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9828 · Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 28
  8. After wuḍūʾ

Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, wa ashhadu anna sayyidanā Muḥammadan ﷺ ʿabduhu wa rasūluh. Allāhumma-jʿalnī mina-t-tawwābīna wa-jʿalnī mina-l-mutaṭahhirīn.

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Sayyidinā Muḥammad ﷺ is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me one of those who turn to You in repentance, and make me one of those who keep themselves pure.

The eight gates of the Garden are opened for him, to enter by whichever he wishes.

Said when the wuḍūʾ — or the ghusl — is complete.

  9. Sealed, and kept beneath the Throne

Subḥānaka-llāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk.

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I ask Your forgiveness and I turn to You.

It is sealed with a seal and raised beneath the Throne, and the seal is not broken until the Day of Rising.

The words of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه, for the end of wuḍūʾ.
