Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

What is said inside the prayer, in the order it is prayed.

  1. The opening: distance from my sins

    Allāhumma bāʿid baynī wa bayna khaṭāyāya kamā bāʿadta bayna-l-mashriqi wa-l-maghrib. Allāhumma naqqinī mina-l-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyaḍu mina-d-danas. Allāhumma-ghsil khaṭāyāya bi-l-māʾi wa-th-thalji wa-l-barad.

O Allah, put as much distance between me and my sins as You have put between the east and the west. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with water, snow and hail.

Said quietly after the opening takbīr, before the Fātiḥah.

  2. The opening: I have turned my face

Wajjahtu wajhiya li-lladhī faṭara-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍa ḥanīfan wa mā ana mina-l-mushrikīn. Inna ṣalātī wa nusukī wa maḥyāya wa mamātī lillāhi rabbi-l-ʿālamīn, lā sharīka lah, wa bi-dhālika umirtu wa ana mina-l-muslimīn. Allāhumma anta-l-maliku lā ilāha illā ant. Anta rabbī wa ana ʿabduk, ẓalamtu nafsī wa-ʿtaraftu bi-dhanbī, fa-ghfir lī dhunūbī jamīʿā, innahu lā yaghfiru-dh-dhunūba illā ant. Wa-hdinī li-aḥsani-l-akhlāq, lā yahdī li-aḥsanihā illā ant, wa-ṣrif ʿannī sayyiʾahā, lā yaṣrifu ʿannī sayyiʾahā illā ant. Labbayka wa saʿdayk, wa-l-khayru kulluhu fī yadayk, wa-sh-sharru laysa ilayk. Ana bika wa ilayk, tabārakta wa taʿālayt, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk.

I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah. Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am of the Muslims. O Allah, You are the King; there is no god but You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me all my sins; none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character — none guides to the best of it but You — and turn its worst away from me; none turns its worst away but You. Here I am at Your service, and gladly; all good is in Your hands, and evil is not to be ascribed to You. I am by You and to You. Blessed are You and exalted. I ask Your forgiveness and I turn to You.

Said after the opening takbīr. He ﷺ also said it on rising for the night prayer.

  3. The opening: Allah is greatest, by far

Allāhu akbaru kabīrā, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi kathīrā, wa subḥāna-llāhi bukratan wa aṣīlā.

Allah is greatest, by far; abundant praise belongs to Allah; and glory be to Allah, morning and evening.

A man opened his prayer with it, and he ﷺ said: “I marvelled at it — the gates of heaven were opened for it.”

Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim heard him ﷺ say each phrase three times.

  4. The opening: abundant, good, blessed praise

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi ḥamdan kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīh.

Praise belongs to Allah — abundant, good and blessed praise.

A man said it as he joined the row, out of breath. “I saw twelve angels racing to be the one to raise it up.”

  5. The opening: glory be to You, O Allah

Subḥānaka-llāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, wa tabāraka-smuk, wa taʿālā jadduk, wa lā ilāha ghayruk.

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise. Blessed is Your name and exalted Your majesty, and there is no god but You.

Sayyidunā ʿUmar رضي الله عنه would say it aloud, to teach it.

  6. Refuge before reciting

Aʿūdhu billāhi-s-samīʿi-l-ʿalīmi mina-sh-shayṭāni-r-rajīm, min hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa nafthih.

I take refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the outcast — from his madness, his pride and his poetry.

Said after the opening supplication, before the Fātiḥah.

  7. Answering what you recite

Pause where you recite: at a verse of glorification, glorify Allah; at a verse of mercy, ask for it; at a verse of punishment, seek refuge from it.

How he ﷺ recited in the night prayer.

  8. After “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High”

    Subḥāna rabbiya-l-aʿlā.

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

What he ﷺ said on reciting Sūrat al-Aʿlā.

  9. After “Which of the favours of your Lord…”

Lā bi-shayʾin min niʿamika rabbanā nukadhdhib, fa-laka-l-ḥamd.

None of Your favours, our Lord, do we deny; Yours is the praise.

The jinn answered each “fa-bi-ayyi ālāʾi rabbikumā tukadhdhibān” in Sūrat ar-Raḥmān with these words.

  10. After “Is not Allah the most just of judges?”

Balā, wa anā ʿalā dhālika mina-sh-shāhidīn.

Yes indeed — and to that I am one of the witnesses.

At the end of Sūrat at-Tīn.

  11. After “Is He not able to give life to the dead?”

    Balā.

    Yes indeed.

At the end of Sūrat al-Qiyāmah.

  12. After “In what speech after this will they believe?”

    Āmannā billāh.

    We believe in Allah.

At the end of Sūrat al-Mursalāt.

  13. In rukūʿ

    ×3

    Subḥāna rabbiya-l-ʿaẓīm wa bi-ḥamdih.

Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent, and with His praise.

Three times is the least of it.

  14. To You I have bowed

Allāhumma laka rakaʿtu, wa bika āmantu, wa laka aslamtu, khashaʿa laka samʿī wa baṣarī wa mukhkhī wa ʿaẓmī wa ʿaṣabī.

O Allah, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, my sight, my mind, my bones and my sinews are humbled before You.

    In rukūʿ.

  15. Glory be to You, our Lord

    Subḥānaka-llāhumma rabbanā wa bi-ḥamdik, Allāhumma-ghfir lī.

Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise. O Allah, forgive me.

He ﷺ said it often in his rukūʿ and his sujūd.

  16. All-Glorious, All-Holy

    Subbūḥun quddūsun rabbu-l-malāʾikati wa-r-rūḥ.

All-Glorious, All-Holy, Lord of the angels and of the Spirit.

    In rukūʿ and in sujūd.

  17. Lord of might and dominion

    Subḥāna dhi-l-jabarūti wa-l-malakūti wa-l-kibriyāʾi wa-l-ʿaẓamah.

Glory be to the Possessor of might, dominion, grandeur and majesty.

In rukūʿ and in sujūd, in the long night prayer.

  18. Rising from rukūʿ

    Samiʿa-llāhu li-man ḥamidah. Rabbanā laka-l-ḥamd.

Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, Yours is the praise.

The first words while rising; the second once standing.

  19. Abundant, good and blessed praise

Rabbanā wa laka-l-ḥamdu, ḥamdan kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīh.

Our Lord, and Yours is the praise — praise abundant, good and blessed.

A man said it behind him ﷺ. “I saw thirty-odd angels racing to be the first to write it.”

  20. Filling the heavens and the earth

Rabbanā laka-l-ḥamdu milʾa-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, wa milʾa mā shiʾta min shayʾin baʿd, ahla-th-thanāʾi wa-l-majd, aḥaqqu mā qāla-l-ʿabd, wa kullunā laka ʿabd. Allāhumma lā māniʿa limā aʿṭayt, wa lā muʿṭiya limā manaʿt, wa lā yanfaʿu dha-l-jaddi minka-l-jadd.

Our Lord, Yours is the praise, filling the heavens and the earth, and filling whatever else You will. You are worthy of praise and glory — the truest thing a servant has said, and we are all Your servants. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and no one’s fortune avails him against You.

Said standing, after rising from rukūʿ.

  21. Purify me

    Allāhumma ṭahhirnī bi-th-thalji wa-l-baradi wa-l-māʾi-l-bārid. Allāhumma ṭahhirnī mina-dh-dhunūbi wa-l-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyaḍu mina-l-wasakh.

O Allah, purify me with snow, with hail and with cold water. O Allah, purify me of sins and errors as a white garment is cleansed of dirt.

In the narration of Ibn Abī Awfā it follows the praise “filling the heavens and the earth”.

  22. In sujūd

    ×3

    Subḥāna rabbiya-l-aʿlā wa bi-ḥamdih.

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High, and with His praise.

Three times is the least of it.

  23. To You I have prostrated

Allāhumma laka sajadtu, wa bika āmantu, wa laka aslamtu, sajada wajhī li-lladhī khalaqahu wa ṣawwarahu wa shaqqa samʿahu wa baṣarah, tabāraka-llāhu aḥsanu-l-khāliqīn.

O Allah, to You I have prostrated, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My face has prostrated to the One who created it and shaped it, and opened its hearing and its sight. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators.

    In sujūd.

  24. Glory be to You; there is no god but You

Subḥānaka wa bi-ḥamdik, lā ilāha illā ant.

Glory be to You, and praise; there is no god but You.

Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah found him ﷺ saying it in the night, bowing or prostrating.

  25. Forgive me all of my sin

Allāhumma-ghfir lī dhanbī kullah, diqqahu wa jillah, wa awwalahu wa ākhirah, wa ʿalāniyatahu wa sirrah.

O Allah, forgive me all of my sin — the small and the great of it, the first and the last of it, the open and the hidden of it.

    In sujūd.

  26. Your pleasure, from Your anger

Allāhumma aʿūdhu bi-riḍāka min sakhaṭik, wa bi-muʿāfātika min ʿuqūbatik, wa aʿūdhu bika mink, lā uḥṣī thanāʾan ʿalayk, anta kamā athnayta ʿalā nafsik.

O Allah, I take refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment; and I take refuge in You from You. I cannot count Your praise; You are as You have praised Yourself.

Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah found him ﷺ saying it in sujūd, in the night. He also said it at the end of his witr.

  27. My Lord, forgive me

    Rabbi-ghfir lī, rabbi-ghfir lī.

My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.

Said sitting between the two prostrations, which he ﷺ made about as long as the prostration itself.

  28. Forgive me, and have mercy on me

    Allāhumma-ghfir lī, wa-rḥamnī, wa ʿāfinī, wa-jburnī, wa-hdinī, wa-rzuqnī, wa-rfaʿnī.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, keep me safe, mend me, guide me and provide for me, and raise me up.

    Between the two prostrations.

  29. In the prostration of recitation

Sajada wajhī li-lladhī khalaqahu wa shaqqa samʿahu wa baṣarahu bi-ḥawlihi wa quwwatih, fa-tabāraka-llāhu aḥsanu-l-khāliqīn.

My face has prostrated to the One who created it and opened its hearing and its sight, by His might and His power. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.

In the prostration made on reciting a verse of prostration, in the prayer or outside it.

  30. Write it as a reward for me

Allāhumma-ktub lī bihā ʿindaka ajrā, wa ḍaʿ ʿannī bihā wizrā, wa-jʿalhā lī ʿindaka dhukhrā, wa taqabbalhā minnī kamā taqabbaltahā min ʿabdika Dāwūd.

O Allah, write it down for me as a reward with You, lift a burden from me by it, keep it for me as a treasure with You, and accept it from me as You accepted it from Your servant Dāwūd.

Ibn ʿAbbās heard him ﷺ say it in the prostration of recitation.

  36. The tashahhud of Ibn ʿUmar

    Bismi-llāh. At-taḥiyyātu lillāh, aṣ-ṣalawātu lillāh, az-zākiyātu lillāh. As-salāmu ʿala-n-nabiyyi wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh. As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi-llāhi-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Shahidtu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, shahidtu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh.

In the name of Allah. Greetings are for Allah, prayers are for Allah, pure deeds are for Allah. Peace be upon the Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I have borne witness that there is no god but Allah; I have borne witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.

How ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما made his tashahhud.

  37. The ṣalāh upon him ﷺ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli sayyidinā Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā sayyidinā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli sayyidinā Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli sayyidinā Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā sayyidinā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli sayyidinā Ibrāhīm, fi-l-ʿālamīn, innaka ḥamīdun majīd.

O Allah, send blessings upon Sayyidinā Muḥammad and upon the family of Sayyidinā Muḥammad, as You sent blessings upon Sayyidinā Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Sayyidinā Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Sayyidinā Muḥammad and the family of Sayyidinā Muḥammad, as You blessed Sayyidinā Ibrāhīm and the family of Sayyidinā Ibrāhīm among all the worlds; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

    After the tashahhud.

  38. The four refuges

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi-l-qabr, wa min ʿadhābi-n-nār, wa min fitnati-l-maḥyā wa-l-mamāt, wa min fitnati-l-masīḥi-d-dajjāl.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of the Fire, from the trial of life and of death, and from the trial of the False Messiah.

“When one of you finishes the last tashahhud, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things.”

  39. From sin and from debt

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi-l-qabr, wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnati-l-masīḥi-d-dajjāl, wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnati-l-maḥyā wa fitnati-l-mamāt. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina-l-maʾthami wa-l-maghram.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave; I take refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah; and I take refuge in You from the trial of life and the trial of death. O Allah, I take refuge in You from sin and from debt.

He ﷺ would say it in the prayer.

  40. I have wronged myself greatly

Allāhumma innī ẓalamtu nafsī ẓulman kathīrā, wa lā yaghfiru-dh-dhunūba illā ant, fa-ghfir lī maghfiratan min ʿindik, wa-rḥamnī, innaka anta-l-ghafūru-r-raḥīm.

O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins but You; so forgive me with a forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me. You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Taught to Sayyidunā Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه to say in his prayer.

  41. What I have sent ahead and left behind

Allāhumma-ghfir lī mā qaddamtu wa mā akhkhart, wa mā asrartu wa mā aʿlant, wa mā asraft, wa mā anta aʿlamu bihi minnī. Anta-l-muqaddimu wa anta-l-muʾakhkhir, lā ilāha illā ant.

O Allah, forgive me what I have sent ahead and what I have left behind, what I have hidden and what I have shown, what I have done to excess, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts back; there is no god but You.

Among the last things he ﷺ said between the tashahhud and the salām.

  42. The Garden, and refuge from the Fire

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka-l-jannah, wa aʿūdhu bika mina-n-nār.

O Allah, I ask You for the Garden, and I take refuge in You from the Fire.

A man said this was all he asked after his tashahhud. “Around these we hum too.”

  43. By Your being the One

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka yā Allāhu bi-annaka-l-wāḥidu-l-aḥadu-ṣ-ṣamad, alladhī lam yalid wa lam yūlad wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad, an taghfira lī dhunūbī, innaka anta-l-ghafūru-r-raḥīm.

O Allah, I ask You, O Allah — by Your being the One, the Only, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor was begotten, to whom none is equal — to forgive me my sins. You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

A man said it at the end of his tashahhud, and the Prophet ﷺ said three times: “He has been forgiven.”

  44. Life while life is good for me

Allāhumma bi-ʿilmika-l-ghayba wa qudratika ʿala-l-khalq, aḥyinī mā ʿalimta-l-ḥayāta khayran lī, wa tawaffanī idhā ʿalimta-l-wafāta khayran lī. Allāhumma wa asʾaluka khashyataka fi-l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādah, wa asʾaluka kalimata-l-ḥaqqi fi-r-riḍā wa-l-ghaḍab, wa asʾaluka-l-qaṣda fi-l-faqri wa-l-ghinā, wa asʾaluka naʿīman lā yanfad, wa asʾaluka qurrata ʿaynin lā tanqaṭiʿ, wa asʾaluka-r-riḍāʾa baʿda-l-qaḍāʾ, wa asʾaluka barda-l-ʿayshi baʿda-l-mawt, wa asʾaluka ladhdhata-n-naẓari ilā wajhik, wa-sh-shawqa ilā liqāʾik, fī ghayri ḍarrāʾa muḍirrah, wa lā fitnatin muḍillah. Allāhumma zayyinnā bi-zīnati-l-īmān, wa-jʿalnā hudātan muhtadīn.

O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive while You know life is better for me, and take me when You know death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You for fear of You in private and in public; for the word of truth in contentment and in anger; for moderation in poverty and in wealth; for a bliss that does not run out and a delight of the eye that does not end; for contentment after Your decree, and the coolness of life after death; and for the joy of looking upon Your Face and longing to meet You, without harmful adversity or misleading trial. O Allah, adorn us with the beauty of faith, and make us guides who are rightly guided.

ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir said it in his prayer, having heard it from the Prophet ﷺ.

  45. Steadfastness in the matter

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka-th-thabāta fi-l-amr, wa-l-ʿazīmata ʿala-r-rushd, wa asʾaluka shukra niʿmatika wa ḥusna ʿibādatik, wa asʾaluka qalban salīman wa lisānan ṣādiqā, wa asʾaluka min khayri mā taʿlam, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā taʿlam, wa astaghfiruka limā taʿlam.

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in the matter and resolve upon right guidance; for thankfulness for Your blessing and the beauty of worshipping You; for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I ask You for the good of what You know, I take refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask Your forgiveness for what You know.

He ﷺ would say it in his prayer.

  46. An easy reckoning

    Allāhumma ḥāsibnī ḥisāban yasīrā.

O Allah, give me an easy reckoning.

Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah heard him ﷺ say it in some of his prayers, and asked what an easy reckoning is: “That He looks into his record and passes over it.”

    Musnad Aḥmad 24215
  47. The closing salām

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh.

Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

Once to the right and once to the left.

  48. The qunūt

Allāhumma-hdinī fī-man hadayt, wa ʿāfinī fī-man ʿāfayt, wa tawallanī fī-man tawallayt, wa bārik lī fī-mā aʿṭayt, wa qinī sharra mā qaḍayt, innaka taqḍī wa lā yuqḍā ʿalayk, wa innahu lā yadhillu man wālayt, wa lā yaʿizzu man ʿādayt, tabārakta rabbanā wa taʿālayt, wa ṣalla-llāhu ʿala-n-nabiyyi Muḥammad.

O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, keep me well among those You have kept well, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree, and none decrees against You; none is abased whom You befriend, and none is honoured whom You oppose. Blessed are You, our Lord, and exalted. And may Allah bless the Prophet Muḥammad.

Taught to Sayyidunā al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī for the witr; said also in the qunūt of Fajr.

  49. The qunūt of Sayyidunā ʿUmar

O Allah, we ask Your help and Your forgiveness, we praise You with all good, and we are not ungrateful to You; we cast off and leave whoever defies You. O Allah, You alone we worship; to You we pray and prostrate; to You we hasten and strive; we hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Your punishment will overtake the disbelievers.

Sayyidunā ʿUmar رضي الله عنه said it in the qunūt of Fajr. It is the qunūt of the witr in the Ḥanafī school.
