Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

Before eating and after it, for the host, and on breaking the fast.

  1. Before eating

    Bismi-llāh.

    In the name of Allah.

“Name Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.”

  2. If you forgot to say it

    Bismi-llāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirih.

In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end.

Said when you remember partway through the meal.

  3. Eating beside someone who is afflicted

Kul, bismi-llāhi thiqatan billāhi wa tawakkulan ʿalayh.

Eat — in the name of Allah, trusting in Allah and relying on Him.

What he ﷺ said as he put the hand of a man with leprosy into the dish with his own.

  4. Praising the food

    Niʿma-l-udumu-l-khall, niʿma-l-udumu-l-khall.

What an excellent relish vinegar is! What an excellent relish vinegar is!

He ﷺ never found fault with food; asking what there was to eat with his bread and told “only vinegar”, he ate and said this.

  5. When the meal is cleared away

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīh, ghayra makfiyyin wa lā muwaddaʿin wa lā mustaghnan ʿanhu, rabbanā.

Praise be to Allah, abundant, good and blessed praise — never enough, never to be left, never to be done without, our Lord.

  6. Who sufficed us and quenched our thirst

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kafānā wa arwānā, ghayra makfiyyin wa lā makfūr.

Praise be to Allah, who has sufficed us and quenched our thirst — praise never enough, and never denied.

Allah is pleased with the servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or drinks and praises Him for it.

What he ﷺ said when he had finished eating.

  7. Who fed me with no power of mine

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah.

Praise be to Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power of my own.

    His past sins are forgiven.

  8. Who made it easy to swallow

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aṭʿama wa saqā, wa sawwaghahu wa jaʿala lahu makhrajā.

Praise be to Allah, who gave food and drink, made it easy to swallow, and made a way out for it.

  9. You fed, and gave drink

Allāhumma aṭʿamta wa asqayta, wa aghnayta wa aqnayta, wa hadayta wa-jtabayta, fa-laka-l-ḥamdu ʿalā mā aʿṭayt.

O Allah, You have fed and given drink, enriched and given plenty, guided and chosen: Yours is the praise for what You have given.

A man who served him ﷺ for eight years heard him say it when he finished eating.

    an-Nasāʾī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 6871 · Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 465
  10. Who made us Muslims

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā wa jaʿalanā muslimīn.

Praise be to Allah, who fed us and gave us drink and made us Muslims.

  11. Bless it for us

Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhi wa aṭʿimnā khayran minh.

O Allah, bless it for us, and feed us with better than it.

  12. On drinking milk

Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhi wa zidnā minh.

O Allah, bless it for us, and give us more of it.

“For there is nothing that suffices in place of both food and drink except milk.”

  13. For the house that fed you

Allāhumma bārik lahum fī-mā razaqtahum, wa-ghfir lahum wa-rḥamhum.

O Allah, bless them in what You have provided them, forgive them, and have mercy on them.

What he ﷺ said for the family of ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr when he had eaten with them.

  14. For the one who gave you food or drink

Allāhumma aṭʿim man aṭʿamanī, wa asqi man asqānī.

O Allah, feed the one who fed me, and give drink to the one who gave me drink.

  15. After eating at someone’s house

Afṭara ʿindakumu-ṣ-ṣāʾimūn, wa akala ṭaʿāmakumu-l-abrār, wa ṣallat ʿalaykumu-l-malāʾikah.

May those who fast break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels pray for you.

What he ﷺ said at the house of Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah after eating there.

  16. On breaking the fast

    Dhahaba-ẓ-ẓamaʾ, wa-btallati-l-ʿurūq, wa thabata-l-ajru in shāʾa-llāh.

The thirst has gone, the veins are moist again, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.

“The one who fasts has, when he breaks his fast, a supplication that is not turned back.”

  17. By Your mercy that embraces all things

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka bi-raḥmatika-llatī wasiʿat kulla shayʾin an taghfira lī.

O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which embraces all things, to forgive me.

What ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما would say as he broke his fast.

  18. For You I fasted

Allāhumma laka ṣumtu wa ʿalā rizqika afṭart.

O Allah, for You I fasted, and with Your provision I break my fast.

  19. Who helped me to fast

    Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aʿānanī fa-ṣumt, wa razaqanī fa-afṭart.

Praise be to Allah, who helped me and I fasted, and provided for me and I broke my fast.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 479
  20. Accept it from us

Allāhumma laka ṣumnā wa ʿalā rizqika afṭarnā, fa-taqabbal minnā, innaka anta-s-samīʿu-l-ʿalīm.

O Allah, for You we fasted and with Your provision we break our fast; so accept it from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 480
  21. When provoked while fasting

    Innī ṣāʾim, innī ṣāʾim.

I am fasting. I am fasting.

Said, twice, to anyone who fights or insults you while you fast.

  22. Invited while fasting

Accept the invitation, and pray for the household instead of eating.

“If one of you is invited, let him accept. If he is fasting let him pray (for them), and if he is not, let him eat.”
