The talbiyah, the Kaʿbah, aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, ʿArafah and Minā, Zamzam, and the greeting in Madīnah.

  1. The talbiyah

Labbayka-llāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna-l-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulk, lā sharīka lak. Labbayka labbayka wa saʿdayk, wa-l-khayru bi-yadayk, labbayka wa-r-raghbāʾu ilayka wa-l-ʿamal.

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner — here I am. All praise and blessing are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner. Here I am, here I am, at Your call; all good is in Your hands. Here I am: all longing is for You, and all deeds.

For the pilgrim in iḥrām, from the start of Ḥajj or ʿUmrah until the rites begin. The words set apart are what ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar used to add to it.

  2. Here I am, God of truth

    Labbayka ilāha-l-ḥaqq.

Here I am, God of truth.

Among the words of his ﷺ talbiyah.

  3. A Ḥajj with no show in it

Allāhumma ḥijjatun lā riyāʾa fīhā wa lā sumʿah.

O Allah, a Ḥajj with no showing off in it and no seeking of renown.

What he ﷺ said, making his Ḥajj on a worn saddle with a cloth worth four dirhams or less.

  4. When something delights you in Ḥajj

    Labbayka inna-l-ʿaysha ʿayshu-l-ākhirah.

Here I am — the true life is the life of the Hereafter.

What he ﷺ added to the talbiyah one day, as though what he saw pleased him.

    al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9035
  5. On seeing the Kaʿbah

Allāhumma zid hādha-l-bayta tashrīfan wa taʿẓīman wa takrīman wa mahābah, wa zid man sharrafahu wa karramahu wa ʿaẓẓamahu mimman ḥajjahu awi-ʿtamarahu tashrīfan wa takrīman wa taʿẓīman wa birrā.

O Allah, increase this House in honour, in greatness, in nobility and in awe; and increase whoever honours it, ennobles it and reveres it, of those who come to it for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah, in honour, nobility, greatness and goodness.

He ﷺ raised his hands when he saw the House, and said this.

    al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9213
  6. You are Peace

    Allāhumma anta-s-salāmu wa minka-s-salām, fa-ḥayyinā rabbanā bi-s-salām.

O Allah, You are Peace and from You is peace; so greet us, our Lord, with peace.

What Sayyidunā ʿUmar said when he saw the House.

    al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9216 · Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 29627
  7. At the Black Stone

Say “Allāhu akbar” each time you come level with the Black Stone, pointing to it.

He ﷺ circled the House on his camel, and every time he came to the corner he pointed to it and said Allāhu akbar.

  8. In faith in You

Allāhumma īmānan bika, wa taṣdīqan bi-kitābika, wa-ttibāʿan li-sunnati nabiyyika ﷺ.

O Allah, in faith in You, in affirmation of Your Book, and in following the Sunnah of Your Prophet ﷺ.

What Sayyidunā ʿAlī said on touching the Stone.

    al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9252
  9. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone

Rabbanā ātinā fi-d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fi-l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāba-n-nār.

Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

  10. Nearing aṣ-Ṣafā

    Qur’an

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing. Al-Baqarah 2:158

He ﷺ recited this as he drew near aṣ-Ṣafā, and said: “I begin with what Allah began with.”

  11. On aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah

    ×3

Lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamd, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdah, anjaza waʿdah, wa naṣara ʿabdah, wa hazama-l-aḥzāba waḥdah.

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, gave His servant victory, and routed the confederates alone.

Climb until you see the House, face the qiblah, declare Allah’s oneness and greatness, and say this; then make duʿāʾ. Three times, and the same on al-Marwah.

  12. Ibn ʿUmar’s prayer on aṣ-Ṣafā

Allāhumma-ʿṣimnā bi-dīnika wa ṭawāʿiyatika wa ṭawāʿiyati rasūlika ﷺ, wa jannibnā ḥudūdak. Allāhumma-jʿalnā nuḥibbuka wa nuḥibbu malāʾikataka wa anbiyāʾaka wa rusulak, wa nuḥibbu ʿibādaka-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Allāhumma ḥabbibnā ilayka wa ilā malāʾikatika wa ilā anbiyāʾika wa rusulika wa ilā ʿibādika-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Allāhumma yassirnā li-l-yusrā wa jannibna-l-ʿusrā, wa-ghfir lanā fi-l-ākhirati wa-l-ūlā, wa-jʿalnā min aʾimmati-l-muttaqīn.

O Allah, keep us safe by Your religion, by obedience to You and obedience to Your Messenger ﷺ, and keep us away from Your limits. O Allah, make us love You, love Your angels, Your prophets and Your messengers, and love Your righteous servants. O Allah, make us beloved to You, to Your angels, to Your prophets and Your messengers, and to Your righteous servants. O Allah, ease us towards ease and keep us from hardship; forgive us in the Hereafter and in this first life, and make us leaders of the God-fearing.

    al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9346
  13. Between aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah

    Rabbi-ghfir wa-rḥam, innaka anta-l-aʿazzu-l-akram.

My Lord, forgive and have mercy; You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous.

What ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd said as he hastened through the valley between them; Ibn ʿUmar said the same.

    Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 29647 · al-Bayhaqī, as-Sunan al-Kubrā 9352
  14. At ʿArafah

Allāhumma laka-l-ḥamdu ka-lladhī taqūlu wa khayran mimmā naqūl. Allāhumma laka ṣalātī wa nusukī wa maḥyāya wa mamātī, wa ilayka maʾābī, wa laka rabbi turāthī. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi-l-qabr, wa waswasati-ṣ-ṣadr, wa shatāti-l-amr. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā tajīʾu bihi-r-rīḥ.

O Allah, Yours is the praise as You say it, and better than what we say. O Allah, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are Yours; to You is my return, and Yours, my Lord, is all I leave. O Allah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, the whispering of the heart, and the scattering of my affairs. O Allah, I take refuge in You from the evil the wind brings.

What he ﷺ said most at the standing on ʿArafah. The tahlīl of the day of ʿArafah is with the blessed days.

  15. At al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām

Face the qiblah and call on Allah; say Allāhu akbar and lā ilāha illa-llāh, and declare His oneness, until the sky is bright.

What he ﷺ did at al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām in Muzdalifah after Fajr, until it was very light.

  16. Stoning the pillars

Say “Allāhu akbar” with every pebble. After the first and the middle pillar, move aside, face the qiblah, raise your hands and make duʿāʾ at length. Do not stop at the last.

  17. Drinking Zamzam

Allāhumma asʾaluka ʿilman nāfiʿā, wa rizqan wāsiʿā, wa shifāʾan min kulli dāʾ.

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that benefits, provision that is ample, and a cure for every illness.

“Zamzam water is for whatever it is drunk for.” Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما would say this when he drank it.

    al-Ḥākim, al-Mustadrak 1739 · Sunan Ibn Mājah 3062
  18. For the pilgrim

    Allāhumma-ghfir li-l-ḥājji wa li-mani-staghfara lahu-l-ḥājj.

O Allah, forgive the pilgrim, and those the pilgrim asks forgiveness for.

    al-Ḥākim, al-Mustadrak 1612
  19. To someone leaving for Ḥajj

    Zawwadaka-llāhu-t-taqwā, wa wajjahaka fi-l-khayr, wa kafāka-l-hamm.

May Allah provision you with piety, turn you towards good, and spare you worry.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 506
  20. To a pilgrim who has returned

Qabila-llāhu ḥajjak, wa ghafara dhanbak, wa akhlafa nafaqatak.

May Allah accept your Ḥajj, forgive your sin, and replace what you spent.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 506
  21. Greeting the Prophet ﷺ at his grave

As-salāmu ʿalayka yā rasūla-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā abā bakr. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā abatāh.

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, Abū Bakr. Peace be upon you, my father.

Whenever ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar returned from a journey he came to the grave and said this — the last greeting to his father, Sayyidunā ʿUmar.

    Muṣannaf ʿAbd ar-Razzāq 6724
