Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. Al-Baqarah 2:255

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination." Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." Al-Baqarah 2:285–286

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bi-wajhika-l-karīmi wa kalimātika-t-tāmmah, min sharri mā anta ākhidhun bi-nāṣiyatih. Allāhumma anta takshifu-l-maghrama wa-l-maʾtham. Allāhumma lā yuhzamu junduk, wa lā yukhlafu waʿduk, wa lā yanfaʿu dha-l-jaddi minka-l-jadd. Subḥānaka wa bi-ḥamdik.

O Allah, I take refuge in Your noble Face and Your perfect words from the evil of everything You hold by the forelock. O Allah, You remove debt and sin. O Allah, Your army is not defeated, Your promise is not broken, and no one’s fortune avails him against You. Glory be to You, and praise.

  20. Drive my devil away

Bismi-llāhi waḍaʿtu janbī. Allāhumma-ghfir lī dhanbī, wa akhsiʾ shayṭānī, wa fukka rihānī, wa-jʿalnī fi-n-nadiyyi-l-aʿlā.

In the name of Allah I lay my side down. O Allah, forgive me my sin, drive my devil away, free me from what holds me in pledge, and place me in the highest assembly.

  21. Who sufficed me and sheltered me

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kafānī wa āwānī wa aṭʿamanī wa saqānī, wa-lladhī manna ʿalayya fa-afḍal, wa-lladhī aʿṭānī fa-ajzal. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi ʿalā kulli ḥāl. Allāhumma rabba kulli shayʾin wa malīkahu wa ilāha kulli shayʾ, aʿūdhu bika mina-n-nār.

Praise be to Allah, who sufficed me and sheltered me, fed me and gave me drink; who favoured me and was generous, and gave to me and gave abundantly. Praise be to Allah in every state. O Allah, Lord and Sovereign of everything, God of everything, I take refuge in You from the Fire.

  22. Originator of the heavens and the earth

Allāhumma fāṭira-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, ʿālima-l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādah, anta rabbu kulli shayʾin wa ilāhu kulli shayʾ, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta waḥdaka lā sharīka lak, wa anna sayyidanā Muḥammadan ﷺ ʿabduka wa rasūluk, wa-l-malāʾikatu yashhadūn. Aʿūdhu bika mina-sh-shayṭāni wa shirkih, wa aʿūdhu bika an aqtarifa ʿalā nafsī ithman aw ajurrahu ʿalā muslim.

O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You are the Lord of all things and the God of all things. I bear witness that there is no god but You alone, without partner, and that Sayyidinā Muhammad ﷺ is Your servant and Your Messenger — and the angels bear witness. I take refuge in You from Satan and the partners he calls to, and I take refuge in You from bringing a sin upon myself or drawing it onto a Muslim.

He ﷺ taught ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr to say this when he wanted to sleep.

Musnad Aḥmad 6597 · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5067
  23. Forgive me my sin

Bi-smika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī, fa-ghfir lī dhanbī.

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side; so forgive me my sin.

What he ﷺ said when he lay down to sleep.

    Musnad Aḥmad 6620
  24. Forgiveness, three times

    ×3

Astaghfiru-llāha-l-ʿaẓīma-lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa-l-ḥayya-l-qayyūma wa atūbu ilayh.

I ask forgiveness of Allah the Magnificent, besides whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, and I turn to Him in repentance.

Whoever says it three times as he goes to bed, Allah forgives his sins, even if they are as the foam of the sea, as the leaves of the trees, as the sands of ʿĀlij, or as the days of this world.

  25. In Your pardon from Your punishment

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bi-muʿāfātika min ʿuqūbatik, wa aʿūdhu bi-riḍāka min sakhaṭik, wa aʿūdhu bika mink. Allāhumma lā astaṭīʿu thanāʾan ʿalayka wa law ḥaraṣt, wa lākin anta kamā athnayta ʿalā nafsik.

O Allah, I take refuge in Your pardon from Your punishment, in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in You from You. O Allah, I cannot praise You as You deserve however hard I try; You are as You have praised Yourself.

Sayyidunā ʿAlī heard him ﷺ say this when he had finished his prayer and lain down for the night.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ 1992
  26. Sufficiency for my family

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka ghina-l-ahli wa-l-mawlā, wa aʿūdhu bika an tadʿuwa ʿalayya raḥimun qaṭaʿtuhā.

O Allah, I ask You for sufficiency for my family and those in my care, and I take refuge in You from a tie of kinship I have cut calling out against me.

What Zayd ibn Thābit (may Allah be pleased with him) said when he lay down to sleep.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 4849
  27. The bedtime words of Qaylah

Bismi-llāh, wa atawakkalu ʿala-llāh, waḍaʿtu janbī li-rabbī, astaghfiruhu li-dhanbī. Aʿūdhu billāhi wa bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmāti-llatī lā yujāwizuhunna barrun wa lā fājir, min sharri mā yanzilu mina-s-samāʾi wa mā yaʿruju fīhā, wa sharri mā yanzilu fi-l-arḍi wa sharri mā yakhruju minhā, wa sharri fitani-n-nahār, wa ṭawāriqi-l-layli illā ṭāriqan yaṭruqu bi-khayr. Āmantu billāh, iʿtaṣamtu billāh. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhi-staslama li-qudratihi kullu shayʾ, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī dhalla li-ʿizzatihi kullu shayʾ, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī tawāḍaʿa li-ʿaẓamatihi kullu shayʾ, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī khashaʿa li-mulkihi kullu shayʾ. Allāhumma innī asʾaluka bi-maʿāqidi-l-ʿizzi min ʿarshik, wa muntaha-r-raḥmati min kitābik, wa jaddika-l-aʿlā, wa-smika-l-akbar, wa kalimātika-t-tāmmāti-llatī lā yujāwizuhunna barrun wa lā fājir, an tanẓura ilaynā naẓratan marḥūmah, lā tadaʿu lanā dhanban illā ghafartah, wa lā faqran illā jabartah, wa lā ʿaduwwan illā ahlaktah, wa lā ʿuryānan illā kasawtah, wa lā daynan illā qaḍaytah, wa lā amran lanā fīhi ṣalāḥun fi-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirati illā aʿṭaytanāh, yā arḥama-r-rāḥimīn. Āmantu billāhi wa-ʿtaṣamtu bih.

In the name of Allah; I rely on Allah. I lay my side down for my Lord, and I ask His forgiveness for my sin. I take refuge in Allah, and in the perfect words of Allah which neither the righteous nor the wicked can pass beyond, from the evil of what comes down from the sky and what rises up into it, from the evil of what descends into the earth and the evil of what comes out of it, from the evil of the trials of the day, and from whatever knocks in the night — except one that knocks with good. I believe in Allah; I hold fast to Allah. Praise be to Allah, to whose power all things have surrendered; praise be to Allah, before whose might all things are lowly; praise be to Allah, before whose greatness all things are humbled; praise be to Allah, to whose dominion all things are submissive. O Allah, I ask You by the seats of glory of Your Throne, by the utmost of mercy in Your Book, by Your exalted majesty, Your greatest name and Your perfect words which neither the righteous nor the wicked can pass beyond, to look upon us with a look of mercy that leaves us no sin but You forgive it, no poverty but You mend it, no enemy but You destroy him, no nakedness but You clothe it, no debt but You settle it, and no matter in which our good lies, in this world or the next, but You give it to us, O Most Merciful of the merciful. I believe in Allah and hold fast to Him.

The words Qaylah bint Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with her) said when she lay down after the night prayer; she then said the hundred of tasbīḥ, taḥmīd and takbīr.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 25/3
  28. From evil that clings

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina-sh-sharri walūʿā, wa mina-l-jūʿi ḍajīʿā.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from evil that clings, and from hunger as a bedfellow.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ 7196
  29. Who is exalted and all-subduing

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī ʿalā fa-qahar, wa baṭana fa-khabar, wa malaka fa-qadar. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī yuḥyī wa yumīt, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.

Praise be to Allah, who is exalted and so subdues all things, who is hidden and so knows all things, who possesses all and so has power over it. Praise be to Allah, who gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things.

Whoever says it on going to bed comes out of his sins as on the day his mother bore him.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ 7891
  30. From what knocks in the night

Āmantu billāhi wa kafartu bi-ṭ-ṭāghūt, waʿdu-llāhi ḥaqq, wa ṣadaqa-l-mursalūn. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ṭawāriqi hādha-l-layli illā ṭāriqan yaṭruqu bi-khayr.

I believe in Allah and I reject every false god. The promise of Allah is true, and the messengers spoke the truth. O Allah, I take refuge in You from whatever knocks in this night, except one that knocks with good.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 3454
  31. Let me enjoy my hearing and sight

Allāhumma mattiʿnī bi-samʿī wa baṣarī, wa-jʿalhuma-l-wāritha minnī, wa-nṣurnī ʿalā ʿaduwwī, wa arinī minhu thaʾrī. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ghalabati-d-dayni wa mina-l-jūʿ, fa-innahu biʾsa-ḍ-ḍajīʿ.

O Allah, let me enjoy my hearing and my sight, and let them be the last of me to go; help me against my enemy and let me see my right taken from him. O Allah, I take refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt, and from hunger, for it is an evil bedfellow.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah
  32. Excuse me my failings

Allāhumma tajāwaz ʿan sayyiʾātī, wa-ʿdhurnī bi-ʿillātī.

O Allah, pass over my misdeeds, and excuse me for my failings.

What Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him) said when he lay down to sleep.

    aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr 1009
  33. A true and good dream

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka ruʾyā ṣāliḥatan, ṣādiqatan ghayra kādhibah, nāfiʿatan ghayra ḍārrah.

O Allah, I ask You for a good dream — true and not false, beneficial and not harmful.

What Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah said when she wanted to sleep; after it she spoke no more until morning.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah
  34. The last words before sleep

Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, lā maljaʾa wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk. Āmantu bi-kitābika-lladhī anzalt, wa bi-nabiyyika-lladhī arsalt.

O Allah, I surrender myself to You, I entrust my affair to You, I turn my face to You, and I place my back under Your protection — out of hope in You and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You sent down, and in Your Prophet whom You sent.

If you die that night, you die upon the fiṭrah.

Make wuḍūʾ as for the prayer, lie on your right side, and make these the last words you say.

  35. Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah, every night

    Qur’an

Whoever recites it every night will never be struck by poverty. Ibn Masʿūd had his daughters recite it every night.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 680
