Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

Leaving the house and coming back to it, putting on clothes, and the words for a family.

  1. Leaving the house

Bismi-llāh, tawakkaltu ʿala-llāh, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

In the name of Allah; I put my trust in Allah; there is no might and no power except by Allah.

It is said to him: “You are guided, you are sufficed, and you are protected” — and the devils turn away from him.

  2. That I not go astray

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika an aḍilla aw uḍall, aw azilla aw uzall, aw aẓlima aw uẓlam, aw ajhala aw yujhala ʿalayy.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from going astray or being led astray, from slipping or being made to slip, from wronging or being wronged, and from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly.

Whenever he ﷺ left her house, said Umm Salamah, he raised his eyes to the sky and said this.

  3. Entering the house

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayra-l-mawliji wa khayra-l-makhraj. Bismi-llāhi walajnā, wa bismi-llāhi kharajnā, wa ʿala-llāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā.

O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah our Lord we put our trust.

Then greet your family with salām.

  4. Entering a house where no one is

    As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi-llāhi-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

Peace be upon us, and upon the righteous servants of Allah.

What ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما said to say on entering a house no one lives in.

  5. Coming home in the day

    Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kafānī wa āwānī, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aṭʿamanī wa saqānī, wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī manna ʿalayya fa-afḍal, wa asʾaluka bi-ʿizzatika an tunjiyanī mina-n-nār.

Praise be to Allah, who sufficed me and gave me shelter; praise be to Allah, who fed me and gave me drink; praise be to Allah, who favoured me and was generous to me. I ask You by Your might to save me from the Fire.

What he ﷺ would say when he came home during the day.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 720
  6. Putting on a garment

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kasānī hādha-th-thawba wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah.

Praise be to Allah, who clothed me in this garment and provided it for me, without any might or power of my own.

His past sins are forgiven, and those to come.

  7. Putting on something new

Allāhumma laka-l-ḥamdu anta kasawtanīh, asʾaluka min khayrihi wa khayri mā ṣuniʿa lah, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri mā ṣuniʿa lah.

O Allah, Yours is the praise — You clothed me in it. I ask You for its good and the good it was made for, and I take refuge in You from its evil and the evil it was made for.

When he ﷺ put on something new he would name it — a turban, a shirt, a cloak — then say this.

  8. What covers me and adorns me

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kasānī mā uwārī bihi ʿawratī wa atajammalu bihi fī ḥayātī.

Praise be to Allah, who has clothed me with what covers my nakedness and what I beautify myself with in my life.

Whoever says it on putting on something new, then gives away the garment it replaces, is in the care, the keeping and the covering of Allah, living and dead.

  9. To someone in new clothes

    Ablī wa akhliqī.

Wear it out, and wear it out again — may you live long in it.

What he ﷺ said, twice, to the little girl Umm Khālid as he dressed her in a new garment.

  10. May you wear it out

    Tublī wa yukhlifu-llāhu taʿālā.

May you wear it out, and may Allah Most High give you another.

What the Companions said to one of them wearing something new.

  11. Wear it new, live praised

Ilbas jadīdā, wa ʿish ḥamīdā, wa mut shahīdā.

Wear new clothes, live a praiseworthy life, and die a martyr.

What he ﷺ said to Sayyidunā ʿUmar, on seeing him in a white garment.

  12. Taking off your clothes

    Bismi-llāhi-lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa.

In the name of Allah, besides whom there is no god.

It is a screen between the eyes of the jinn and the nakedness of the children of Ādam.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 273
  13. Looking in the mirror

Al-ḥamdu lillāh. Allāhumma kamā ḥassanta khalqī fa-ḥassin khuluqī.

Praise be to Allah. O Allah, as You have made my form beautiful, make my character beautiful.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 163
  14. Before intimacy

    Bismi-llāh. Allāhumma jannibna-sh-shayṭān, wa jannibi-sh-shayṭāna mā razaqtanā.

In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Satan away from us, and keep Satan away from what You grant us.

If a child is decreed for them from it, Satan will never harm it.

  15. Protection for children

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynin lāmmah.

I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every harmful creature, and from every evil eye.

He ﷺ sought protection for al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn with these words — “one” for “you both”, “aʿīdhukumā” — and said that Ibrāhīm sought it with them for Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq.

  16. The adhān in a newborn’s ear

Call the adhān in the ear of a newborn child.

He ﷺ gave the call to prayer in the ear of al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī when Sayyidatunā Fāṭimah gave birth to him.

  17. Congratulating on a birth

Shakarta-l-wāhib, wa būrika laka fi-l-mawhūb, wa balagha ashuddah, wa ruziqta birrah.

May you thank the Giver and be blessed in what was given; may he reach his full strength, and may you be granted his devotion.

What al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī taught a man he heard congratulating a father with “may the horseman bring you joy”.

    Musnad Ibn al-Jaʿd 3398 · Ibn Abī ad-Dunyā, an-Nafaqah ʿala-l-ʿIyāl 201
  18. On seeing something you like of your own

Mā shāʾa-llāh, lā quwwata illā billāh.

What Allah willed has occurred; there is no power except in Allah

Whoever sees something that pleases him and says this, the evil eye will not harm it.

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 207
