Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.

Ar-Raʿd 13:28

480 adhkār in 23 sets

With the dying, when someone dies, the funeral prayer, the burial, consoling the family, and visiting the graves.

  1. With the dying

    Lā ilāha illa-llāh.

There is no god but Allah.

Whoever’s last words are lā ilāha illa-llāh will enter the Garden.

“Prompt your dying with lā ilāha illa-llāh.” Say it gently near them, so that it is their last word.

  2. Sūrah Yā Sīn

    Qur’an

“Recite Yā Sīn over your dying.”

  3. In the pangs of death

Lā ilāha illa-llāh, inna li-l-mawti sakarāt.

There is no god but Allah; death has its throes.

His ﷺ words at the end, dipping his hands into water and wiping his face.

  4. Help me through death’s throes

    Allāhumma aʿinnī ʿalā ghamarāti-l-mawt.

O Allah, help me through the floods of death.

The narrator was unsure whether he ﷺ said “ghamarāt” or “sakarāt” — the floods, or the throes.

  5. Join me with the highest company

    Allāhumma-ghfir lī wa-rḥamnī wa alḥiqnī bi-r-rafīqi-l-aʿlā.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, and join me with the highest company.

Sayyidatunā ʿĀʾishah heard him ﷺ say this, leaning against her, at the end.

  6. On closing the eyes of the dead

Allāhumma-ghfir li-abī salamah, wa-rfaʿ darajatahu fi-l-mahdiyyīn, wa-khlufhu fī ʿaqibihi fi-l-ghābirīn, wa-ghfir lanā wa lahu yā rabba-l-ʿālamīn, wa-fsaḥ lahu fī qabrih, wa nawwir lahu fīh.

O Allah, forgive Abū Salamah, raise his rank among the rightly guided, and take his place with those he leaves behind. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds; make his grave wide for him, and fill it with light for him.

He ﷺ closed Abū Salamah’s eyes — “when the soul is taken, the sight follows it” — and said this. Name the one who has died in his place. “Say nothing but good, for the angels say āmīn to what you say.”

  7. When someone close to you dies

Allāhumma-ghfir lī wa lah, wa aʿqibnī minhu ʿuqbā ḥasanah.

O Allah, forgive me and him, and give me a good successor after him.

What he ﷺ told Umm Salamah to say when Abū Salamah died.

  8. On hearing that a brother has died

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn. Allāhumma-ktubhu ʿindaka mina-l-muḥsinīn, wa-jʿal kitābahu fī ʿilliyyīn, wa-khlufhu fī ahlihi fi-l-ghābirīn, wa lā taḥrimnā ajrah, wa lā taftinnā baʿdah.

Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. And indeed we, to our Lord, will surely return. O Allah, write him among the good-doers with You, place his record in ʿIlliyyīn, take his place with the family he leaves behind, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not try us after him.

    “Death is a fright.”

    Ibn as-Sunnī, ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah 561
  9. The funeral prayer: al-Fātiḥah

    Qur’an

Ibn ʿAbbās recited al-Fātiḥah in a funeral prayer and said: “So that you know it is the Sunnah.”

  10. The funeral prayer

Allāhumma-ghfir lahu wa-rḥamh, wa ʿāfihi wa-ʿfu ʿanh, wa akrim nuzulah, wa wassiʿ mudkhalah, wa-ghsilhu bi-l-māʾi wa-th-thalji wa-l-barad, wa naqqihi mina-l-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta-th-thawba-l-abyaḍa mina-d-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhu-l-jannah, wa aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi-l-qabri aw min ʿadhābi-n-nār.

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him; make his reception honourable and his entry wide. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as You cleanse a white garment of dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the punishment of the grave — or of the Fire.

ʿAwf ibn Mālik: I memorised this from his ﷺ prayer over a funeral, until I wished I were that dead man.

  11. For all of us

Allāhumma-ghfir li-ḥayyinā wa mayyitinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā, wa shāhidinā wa ghāʾibinā. Allāhumma man aḥyaytahu minnā fa-aḥyihi ʿala-l-īmān, wa man tawaffaytahu minnā fa-tawaffahu ʿala-l-islām. Allāhumma lā taḥrimnā ajrah, wa lā tuḍillanā baʿdah.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our men and our women, those present and those absent. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive in faith; and whoever of us You take, take him in Islam. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not let us go astray after him.

  12. You are its Lord

Allāhumma anta rabbuhā, wa anta khalaqtahā, wa anta hadaytahā li-l-islām, wa anta qabaḍta rūḥahā, wa anta aʿlamu bi-sirrihā wa ʿalāniyatihā. Jiʾnāka shufaʿāʾa fa-ghfir lah.

O Allah, You are its Lord; You created it, You guided it to Islam, You took its soul, and You know best what it hid and what it showed. We have come to You as intercessors, so forgive him.

How Abū Hurayrah said he heard the Prophet ﷺ pray over the dead.

  13. In Your care

Allāhumma inna fulāna-bna fulānin fī dhimmatik, wa ḥabli jiwārik, fa-qihi min fitnati-l-qabri wa ʿadhābi-n-nār, wa anta ahlu-l-wafāʾi wa-l-ḥaqq. Fa-ghfir lahu wa-rḥamh, innaka anta-l-ghafūru-r-raḥīm.

O Allah, so-and-so, son of so-and-so, is in Your care and under the rope of Your protection; so guard him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You are the One of faithfulness and truth. So forgive him and have mercy on him; You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Name the one who has died.

  14. In need of Your mercy

Allāhumma ʿabduka wa-bnu amatik, iḥtāja ilā raḥmatik, wa anta ghaniyyun ʿan ʿadhābih. In kāna muḥsinan fa-zid fī iḥsānih, wa in kāna musīʾan fa-tajāwaz ʿanh.

O Allah, Your servant and the son of Your maidservant is in need of Your mercy, and You have no need to punish him. If he did good, add to his good; and if he did wrong, pass over it.

What he ﷺ said when he stood to pray over the dead.

    al-Ḥākim, al-Mustadrak 1328
  15. Over a child

    Allāhumma aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi-l-qabr.

O Allah, protect him from the punishment of the grave.

What Abū Hurayrah said, praying over a child who had never done a wrong.

  16. A forerunner for us

Allāhumma-jʿalhu lanā faraṭan wa salafan wa ajrā.

O Allah, make him one who goes ahead of us, a forerunner, and a reward for us.

What al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said over a child, after reciting al-Fātiḥah.

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, before 1335 (al-Ḥasan)
  17. Placing the body in the grave

    Bismi-llāhi wa ʿalā sunnati rasūli-llāh ﷺ.

In the name of Allah, and on the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

  18. After the burial

Ask forgiveness for your brother, and ask that he be made firm — he is being questioned now.

What he ﷺ said, standing by the grave, when the burial was done.

  19. Consoling the bereaved

Inna lillāhi mā akhadh, wa lahu mā aʿṭā, wa kullun ʿindahu bi-ajalin musammā, fa-l-taṣbir wa-l-taḥtasib.

To Allah belongs what He took, and His is what He gave, and everything has its appointed time with Him. So let her be patient and hope for the reward.

His ﷺ message to his daughter when her little son was dying. Said to a man: “fa-l-yaṣbir wa-l-yaḥtasib”; to the one you speak to: “fa-ṣbir wa-ḥtasib”.

  20. When a child dies

Praise Allah and say “innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn”.

Of the servant who does so when his child is taken, Allah says: “Build for My servant a house in the Garden, and name it the House of Praise.”

  21. Visiting the graves

    As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla-d-diyāri mina-l-muʾminīna wa-l-muslimīn, wa innā in shāʾa-llāhu la-lāḥiqūn. Asʾalu-llāha lanā wa lakumu-l-ʿāfiyah.

Peace be upon you, people of these dwellings, believers and Muslims. We shall, if Allah wills, join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

What he ﷺ taught his Companions to say when they went out to the graves.

  22. At al-Baqīʿ

As-salāmu ʿalaykum dāra qawmin muʾminīn, wa atākum mā tūʿadūna ghadan muʾajjalūn, wa innā in shāʾa-llāhu bikum lāḥiqūn. Allāhumma-ghfir li-ahli baqīʿi-l-gharqad.

Peace be upon you, abode of a believing people. What you were promised has come to you; you are given respite until tomorrow; and we shall, if Allah wills, join you. O Allah, forgive the people of Baqīʿ al-Gharqad.

He ﷺ went out in the last part of the night to al-Baqīʿ and said this.

  23. Passing by graves

As-salāmu ʿalaykum yā ahla-l-qubūr, yaghfiru-llāhu lanā wa lakum, antum salafunā wa naḥnu bi-l-athar.

Peace be upon you, people of the graves. May Allah forgive us and you. You went before us, and we follow.

He ﷺ passed the graves of Madīnah and turned his face towards them.

  24. You went ahead of us

As-salāmu ʿalaykum dāra qawmin muʾminīn, antum lanā faraṭ, wa innā bikum lāḥiqūn. Allāhumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahum wa lā taftinnā baʿdahum.

Peace be upon you, abode of a believing people. You went ahead of us, and we shall join you. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, and do not try us after them.
