Short and steady — the plain meaning, with the reports that bear on it and little else.

‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏ ‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏

Or do they say, "He has invented it?" Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allah at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving the Merciful."

قَوْله تَعَالَى: ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏ ‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ فِي التَّفْسِير: أَن أَبَا جهل قَالَ للنَّبِي: يامحمد، إِنَّك تفتري على الله حَيْثُ تزْعم أَن هَذَا الْقُرْآن من وحيه وَكَلَامه، وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ كَلَام تَقوله من تِلْقَاء نَفسك.

وَقَوله: ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏ ‏‏ ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ أَي: إِن افتريت على الله وعاقبني لَا تملك دفع عُقُوبَته عني.

وَقَوله: ‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ .

وَقَوله: ‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ أَي: كفى بِاللَّه شَهِيدا بيني وَبَيْنكُم.

وَقَوله: ‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ظَاهر الْمَعْنى.
