al-Jabbār
The Compeller
Whose will runs through all things, and who mends what is broken
The word
The root jabr carries growing, rising and setting right. Jabara Allāhu al-ʿaẓm: Allah set the broken bone and it knit — as the old verse says, “God set the religion aright, and it was set.” A palm tree too tall for any hand to reach is called jabbārah, for passing beyond the hand’s reach is height and increase. Jabbār also means one who compels others to what he wills: jabarahu as-sulṭān and ajbarahu, “the ruler forced him”. Jabariyyah and jabarūt mean grandeur and majesty, so al-Jabbār is the Possessor of Jabarūt. Its form, faʿʿāl, gives it intensity; its plain verb is not used in this sense — one says rather tajabbara, mutajabbir, jabbār.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: al-Jabbār is the One whose will is carried out, by compulsion, in every single being, while no one’s will is carried out in Him; the One from whose grasp no one escapes, and before the precincts of whose presence every hand falls short. Al-Qushayrī gathers the meanings of the Name: He is the Most High whom no unjust hand can reach and no rival can contest; the One in whose dominion nothing comes to be but what He wills, whether creatures like it or not; and the One who sets right — who mends what is broken and fills what is lacking, who meets His creatures’ needs and gives them the means to live. Then he adds: when a Name can bear several meanings that are all true of Him, whoever calls on Him by it has praised Him with all of them at once. So al-Jabbār overpowers those who rebel and mends those who are broken: a height no one can rise to, and a mercy no one can measure.
The servant’s share
The jabbār among servants, as al-Ghazālī describes him, is one who has risen above following others and reached the rank of being followed, so that by his bearing and his way he moves people to take him as their example: he gives and does not take, he shapes and is not shaped. This is found in its perfection only in the master of mankind ﷺ. Closer to the seeker’s state is to be a jabbār over his own self — breaking its unruliness and bending it to obedience — while being gentle with others, mending the broken and enriching the poor. Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows that Allah sets affairs right entrusts his affairs to Him and relies on Him in every state. If good comes to him, he knows who sent it; if harm touches him, he knows who will lift it. He does not fear his circumstances falling apart, nor his means running short while his dependants are many — trusting in His kindness and His grace.
A taste
Between the two prostrations the Prophet ﷺ used to say: “O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, mend me, guide me and provide for me.” The one who knows al-Jabbār best is the one who needs Him most. And there is a gentle secret in mending: it only ever comes after breaking, as though the break were the door through which al-Jabbār comes into the heart. So do not despair of a breaking that has come down on you; al-Jabbār breaks only to mend. Whoever knows that no hand can reach Him, so high is He, knows that there is no way to Him but His own kindness; the servant’s whole portion from Him is His goodness — today, knowing Him; tomorrow, His forgiveness.
In their own words
He is the One whose will is carried out by compulsion in every single one, while no one’s will is carried out in Him; the One from whose grasp no one escapes, and before the precincts of whose presence every hand falls short. So the Compeller without qualification is Allah, for He compels everyone and no one compels Him.
When a Name can bear meanings that are all fitting to describe Him, whoever calls on Him by that Name has praised Him with all of those meanings.
Among the courtesies of one who knows that He is the One who sets affairs right: that he direct his affairs to Him and rely on Him in all his states. If good reaches him, he knows that He is its giver and its bestower; if harm reaches him, he knows that He will remove it and lift it. So he does not fear his circumstances falling apart, nor his wealth being little while his dependants are many and his means are weak — trusting in His kindness and His favours.
He is the One who compelled creation to what He willed of His command and His prohibition — one says jabarahu as-sulṭān and ajbarahu, with the alif. And it is said: He is the One who mended the needs of creation and gave them sufficiency in the means of living and provision.
