O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you? In whatever form He willed has He assembled you. Al-Infiṭār 82:6-8

“Your Lord, blessed and exalted is He, is modest and generous: when His servant raises his hands to Him, He is too shy to turn them back empty.” Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1488 · Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3556 · Sunan Ibn Mājah 3865

The word

Karam in the speech of the Arabs gathers generosity, nobility and pardon; az-Zajjājī says: al-Karīm is the generous, the mighty and the forgiving — three senses, all of which may be said of Allah. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Karīm is the one of much good. The Arabs call a useful thing whose benefit lasts and is easy to reach karīm: so a she-camel rich in milk is karīmah, a palm whose fruit never fails is karīmah, and the vine is karmah for its abundant good and its fruit within reach; and a thing of worth and weight is called karīm. Az-Zajjāj says: karam is the soul’s quickness to respond; one says “a karīm walnut”, one that cracks easily, as if its quick breaking were a response — and the generous man, quick to good things, is likened to it. Al-Ḥalīmī says: al-Karīm is the One of much benefit, from “a karīm ewe”, one rich in milk that gives freely to the milker and does not hold her milk back.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: al-Karīm is the One who pardons when He has power, keeps His word when He promises, and when He gives, gives beyond the farthest hope, not caring how much He gives or to whom; who is not pleased if a need is taken to another; who, when He is wronged, reproaches and does not press His due to the end; who does not lose whoever takes refuge with Him and turns to Him, and makes him need no go-betweens or intercessors. One in whom all this comes together, without effort, is the absolutely Generous — and that is Allah, glory be to Him, alone. Al-Qushayrī says: the people of truth say that al-Karīm is an attribute of His Essence — He has always been generous and always will be — and that it means He is beyond all meanness, being worthy of the attributes of majesty; and it is said that in describing Him it means the Doer of good, the Bestower, the One of much giving. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: of Allah’s generosity is that He begins with the blessing before it is deserved, gives good freely without seeking return, forgives sin and pardons the wrongdoer. The one who prays says, “O You whose pardon is generous”, and it was said: of the generosity of His pardon is that when a servant repents of a bad deed, He wipes it out and writes a good deed in its place.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: a servant may adorn himself with some of these traits, but only in some matters and with some effort; so he may be called generous, yet he falls short beside the absolutely Generous. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not say karm for the vine, for karm is the heart of the believer” — so what in the servant most deserves this name is his heart. Al-Qushayrī says: al-Junayd said, “The generous one is he who does not make you need a go-between”; al-Ḥārith al-Muḥāsibī said, “The generous one is he who does not care to whom he gives”; and it was said: he is the one who does not press his due to the end; he is the one who, when you sin, makes excuses for you, when you forsake him, keeps up with you, when you fall ill, visits you, and when you are poor, is good to you with himself and his wealth; he is the one who, when a need is brought to him, reproaches himself for not having met it before he was asked.

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says of the verse in al-Infiṭār: He asked him — and it is as if in the very question He prompted the answer, so that he says: “Your generosity toward me deceived me; were it not for Your generosity I would not have done it, for You saw and veiled, You had power and gave respite.” Abū ʿAlī ad-Daqqāq said: the Generous is He who, when He pardons a servant, pardons everyone with the same sin, and every sinner who shares his name. In the ḥadīth, He is too shy to send back empty the hands His servant raises to Him; so whoever tastes this Name is not too shy to ask Him — he is only too shy to ask anyone else. Al-Ghazālī says: the Generous is not pleased if a need is taken to another. The Generous is jealous that any door but His be knocked at; and the most beautiful courtesy before Him is to stand at His door alone, your hand held out to Him.

In their own words

He is the One who, when He has power, pardons; when He promises, keeps His word; when He gives, gives beyond the farthest hope, and does not care how much He gives or to whom; if a need is taken to another He is not pleased; when He is wronged He reproaches, and does not press His due to the end; He does not lose whoever takes refuge with Him and turns to Him, and makes him need no go-betweens or intercessors. One in whom all of that comes together, without effort, is the absolutely Generous — and that is Allah, glory be to Him and exalted, alone.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 117

It is said: He asked him — and it is as if in the very question He prompted him with the answer, so that he says: “Your generosity toward me deceived me; were it not for Your generosity I would not have done it — because You saw and veiled, and You had power and gave respite.”

Imam al-Qushayrī, Laṭāʾif al-Ishārāt, p. 3/697

It is said: he is the one who, when you sin, makes excuses for you; when you forsake him, keeps up with you; when you fall ill, visits you; when you return from a journey, comes to see you; and when you are poor, is good to you with himself and his wealth. And it is said: he is the one who, when a need is brought to him, reproaches himself for not having hastened to meet it before you asked him.
