al-Muḥyī

The Giver of Life

Creator of life, who gives life to the lifeless drop, to the earth after its death, and to hearts by the light of knowing Him

So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah — how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that same one will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent. Ar-Rūm 30:50

“The likeness of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not is the likeness of the living and the dead.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6407

The word

Muḥyī is the active participle of aḥyā, yuḥyī; its object is muḥyā and its verbal noun iḥyāʾ, as az-Zajjājī says. Life is the opposite of death; and ḥayā, short, is rain, for by it the earth lives. Az-Zajjāj says: al-Muḥyī is the One who gave creatures life by creating life in them, and gave life to dead land by sending down rain and bringing up the grass — and from the two, life comes. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is the One who gives life to the lifeless drop and brings out of it a living soul; gives life to decayed bodies by returning the spirits to them at the Raising; gives life to hearts by the light of knowing Him; and gives life to the earth after its death by sending down rain and bringing up provision.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: this too goes back to bringing into being; but when what is brought into being is life, His act is called giving life, and when it is death, His act is called causing death. There is no creator of death and life but Allah, so none causes death and none gives life but Allah. Al-Qushayrī says: al-Muḥyī al-Mumīt is in truth the Creator of life and death, and that is Allah, exalted is He, whom none besides can match in it. Al-Ghazālī says under al-Ḥayy: the living is the one who acts and perceives, so that whatever has no act at all and no perception is dead. Giving life is then pouring perception and action onto what had none — and only the Living who does not die can do it.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says under al-Bāʿith: ignorance is the greater death and knowledge the nobler life; whoever lifts another from ignorance to knowledge has given him life. So the servant’s share in the name al-Muḥyī is to be a means of life — to hearts, through knowledge and remembrance; to bodies, by rescuing, feeding and healing them; to the earth, by planting and watering it. And the first of it is to bring his own heart to life with remembrance: the one who remembers is alive, and the heedless one dead, as in the ḥadīth above.

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says: this company uses the words giving life and causing death, by extension and in a wide sense, for the states of joy and sorrow, of gift and trial — as one says, “so-and-so brought so-and-so to life with his generosity, and killed him by turning away from him.” So the people of reality say: whoever turns to the Real, He brings to life; whoever turns from Him, He causes to die and to pass away. And they recited: “I die when I remember You, then I live again — how often I have lived for You, and how often died!” With them, submission is slaughtering the self with the sword of striving, and faith is the life of the heart by the light of agreement with Him. The One who gives life to dead land with rain gives life to a dead heart with remembrance — and the heart needs His rain more than the earth does.

In their own words

This too goes back to bringing into being; but when what is brought into being is life, His act is called giving life, and when it is death, His act is called causing death. There is no creator of death and life but Allah, glory be to Him; so none causes death and none gives life but Allah.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 131

He is the One who gives life to the lifeless drop and brings out of it a living soul; gives life to decayed bodies by returning the spirits to them at the Raising; gives life to hearts by the light of knowing Him; and gives life to the earth after its death by sending down rain and bringing up provision.

Imam al-Khaṭṭābī, Shaʾn ad-Duʿāʾ, p. 79–80

Then know that this company uses the words giving life and causing death, by extension and in a wide sense, for the states of joy and sorrow, of gift and trial — as one says, “so-and-so brought so-and-so to life with his generosity, and killed him with punishment, or by turning from him and away.” So the people of reality say: whoever turns to the Real, He brings to life; whoever turns from Him, He causes to die and to pass away. And they recited: “I die when I remember You, then I live again — how often I have lived for You, and how often died!”
