And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided. Al-Baqarah 2:186

The word

Mujīb is the active participle of ajāba, yujību; its root form is mujwib, for it is from jawāb, an answer — the wāw’s vowel passed to the jīm, and the wāw, left without a vowel after a kasrah, became a yāʾ, as az-Zajjājī says. Ajāba and istajāba mean the same, al-Khaṭṭābī says. Al-Mujīb is the One who answers the desperate when he calls, rescues the one in anguish when he cries out, and lifts the harm. Al-Ḥalīmī says: this Name is most often called upon together with the Near — “the Near, the Answering”, “Answerer of prayer”, “Answerer of the call of the desperate” — and its meaning is the One who gives the one who asks Him what he wants, which no one else can do.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: al-Mujīb is the One who meets the asking of those who ask with fulfilment, the calling of those who call with an answer, and the need of the desperate with sufficiency — indeed, He blesses before He is called and bestows before He is asked. That belongs to Allah alone, for He knows the need of the needy before they ask; He knew it from eternity, and so He ordered the means of meeting needs by creating foods and sustenance and by making easy the means and tools that lead to every necessity. Al-Qushayrī says: of His gentleness is that He gives before the asking; when He knows His friends have a need, He meets it before they have named it with their tongues; and at times He straitens their state as a trial and a test, to raise their degrees through their patience and thanks in ease and hardship — and when they are close to despair, He comes to them with His beautiful, familiar kindness.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: the servant should first answer his Lord in what He commands and forbids, and in what He urges and calls him to; then answer His servants, with whatever power Allah has blessed him with — meeting every asker’s request if he can, and answering gently if he cannot. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Were I invited to a trotter I would accept, and were a foreleg given me I would take it.” Al-Ghazālī says: his attending invitations and accepting gifts was the height of honouring people and answering them; how many a mean, proud man holds himself above every gift and will not lower himself to attend every invitation, guarding his standing and his pride, not caring for the heart of the one who asks or invites though he is hurt by it — such a man has no share in the meaning of this Name.

A taste

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no Muslim on earth who calls on Allah with a prayer but Allah gives it to him, or turns away from him an evil like it — so long as he does not pray for a sin or for cutting the ties of kinship.” A man among the people said: “Then we will pray much.” He said: “Allah is more.” The answer is wider than being the very thing asked: it may be the gift, it may be a harm turned away, it may be a treasure kept for later; and the hasty one holds back his own answer when he says, “I prayed, and I was not answered.” Al-Qushayrī says: at times He straitens their state, and when they are close to despair He comes to them with His beautiful, familiar kindness. Whoever tastes this Name never tires of praying, for he knows that the prayer itself is an answer: He would not have inspired you to ask unless He meant to give you.

In their own words

He is the One who meets the asking of those who ask with fulfilment, the calling of those who call with an answer, and the need of the desperate with sufficiency — indeed He blesses before the calling and bestows before the praying. That belongs only to Allah, Mighty and Exalted, for He knows the need of the needy before they ask; He knew it in eternity, and so He ordered the means of meeting needs, by creating foods and sustenance and making easy the means and tools that lead to every necessity.

The servant ought to answer, first, his Lord, exalted is He, in what He commands and forbids him and in what He urges and calls him to; then His servants, in what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has blessed him with the power to do — meeting every asker’s request if he is able, and answering him gently if he is not.
