Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and the best Disposer of affairs." Āl ʿImrān 3:173

Ibn ʿAbbās said: “Sufficient for us is Allah, and the best Disposer of affairs.” Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, said it when he was thrown into the fire; and Muḥammad ﷺ said it when they said: “Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.” — But it increased them in faith, and they said: “Sufficient for us is Allah, and the best Disposer of affairs.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4563

The word

Wakīl is faʿīl in the sense of mafʿūl, from wakaltu amrī ilā fulān, “I entrusted my affair to so-and-so” — handed it to him and let him see to it in my place, as az-Zajjāj and az-Zajjājī say; affairs are entrusted to Allah, exalted is He. Al-Farrāʾ is reported to have said that al-Wakīl is the One who suffices; az-Zajjāj rejected it — “we do not know wakaltu in speech for ‘I sufficed’” — while az-Zajjājī says: Allah is the Wakīl of His servants, sufficing them in their affairs and their means; and the wakīl is also the guarantor. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is the Guarantor of His servants’ provision, who sees to their welfare; and in truth He is the One who carries alone the matter entrusted to Him.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: al-Wakīl is the One to whom affairs are entrusted. But those to whom things are entrusted are of two kinds: one to whom some affairs are entrusted — and that is lacking — and One to whom all are entrusted, and that is Allah alone. And again: one who deserves to be entrusted not in himself but by being delegated and appointed — lacking, for he needs the delegating and the appointing — and One who deserves in Himself that affairs be entrusted to Him and hearts rely on Him, with no appointing or delegating from another: that is the absolute Trustee. The absolute Trustee is the One to whom affairs are entrusted, who is fully able to carry them out and faithful to complete them — and that is Allah alone. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One to whom things are handed over and entrusted, in the knowledge that creation and command are His, and none besides Him owns anything. Al-Qushayrī says: al-Wakīl is the One to whom the matter is entrusted; He takes charge of His servants’ states and turns them as He wills and chooses; and when He takes charge of a servant’s affair with His beautiful care, He suffices him every concern and makes him need no one else.

The servant’s share

Al-Qushayrī says: whoever makes a creature his agent is asked for a fee; the agent may betray him in his wealth, may err in handling it, or may not see what is soundest and best for his principal. Whoever is content with Allah as Trustee, He gives him the reward, fulfils his hopes, praises him, and is gentle with him in the finest turns of his states in ways his hopes would never find. And whoever takes Allah as his Trustee must also be Allah’s agent over his own self, exacting His rights and His obligations from it, contending with his self for them night and day, never flagging for a moment, never falling short for the blink of an eye. Al-Ghazālī says: from this you understand how far the servant enters into this Name: he may be an agent in some matters, by another’s delegation, and cannot fulfil them all — so let him know his measure, and discharge what people have entrusted to him.

A taste

Ibn ʿAbbās said: Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, said it when he was thrown into the fire, and Muḥammad ﷺ said it when he was threatened with the people. Al-Qushayrī says of this verse: nothing of the world’s affairs came to confuse their outward state but that risings of unveiling opened in their inner selves, and they grew in certainty upon certainty. And he says: of the signs of true oneness is a large household on the carpet of reliance — the servant does not think his needs too many, for he knows his Master suffices him. Reliance, he says in his Laṭāʾif, is built on the servant’s heart being at ease and not resentful. Reliance is not abandoning the means but abandoning the anxiety in them: you work with your hand, and your heart is in the hand of the Trustee.

In their own words

He is the One to whom affairs are entrusted. But the one entrusted divides into one to whom some affairs are entrusted — and that is lacking — and One to whom all are entrusted, and that is Allah, glory be to Him and exalted, alone. And the one entrusted divides into one who deserves to be entrusted not in himself but by delegation and appointment — and that is lacking, for he is in need of the delegating and the appointing — and One who deserves in Himself that affairs be entrusted to Him and hearts rely on Him, with no appointing or delegating from another: that is the absolute Trustee. The trustee also divides into one who fulfils what is entrusted to him completely, with no shortfall, and one who does not fulfil all of it. The absolute Trustee is the One to whom affairs are entrusted, who is fully able to carry them out and faithful to complete them — and that is Allah, exalted is He, alone.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 129

Know that whoever makes a creature his agent is asked for a fee; the agent may betray him in his wealth, may err in handling it, or may not see what is soundest and best for his principal. Whoever is content with Allah as Trustee, He gives him the reward, fulfils his hopes, praises him and is gentle with him in the finest turns of his states, in ways his hopes would not find and his asking could not take in. And whoever makes Allah, Mighty and Majestic, his Trustee must also be Allah’s agent, glory be to Him, over his own self, in exacting His rights and His obligations and all that is due from him — contending with his self in that night and day, not flagging for a moment, not falling short for the blink of an eye.

Imam al-Qushayrī, at-Taḥbīr fi-t-Tadhkīr, p. 109

He did not say, “whoever relies on Allah, his reliance is enough for him”; He said, “And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him.” — that is, Allah is enough for him, He suffices him. “Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a extent.”: when something has gone before in the decree it will surely come to be; his reliance does not change what is decreed, nor put it off. But reliance is built on the servant’s heart being at ease, not resentful — and that is among the most majestic of blessings.
