ar-Rashīd
The Rightly Guiding
Whose designs move to their ends along the way of rightness with no one to advise, correct or guide Him; who guided all creatures to what is good for them
The word
Rashīd is on the pattern faʿīl in the sense of mufʿil, the One who guides aright — so al-Khaṭṭābī, az-Zajjāj and al-Qushayrī say. Rushd and rashad are rightness and keeping straight, the opposite of straying. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: it may also mean the Wise, possessed of rightness, for the straightness of His design and the aptness of His acts. Az-Zajjāj says: Allah, exalted is He, guided all creatures aright to what is good for them, and guided His friends in particular to the Garden and the paths of reward. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One who points to what is good and calls to it; and it is from the words of the youths in the cave, “prepare for us from our affair right guidance.” — for the One who prepares right guidance is the One who guides aright.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: He is the One whose designs move on to their ends along the way of rightness, with no one to advise, no one to correct and no one to guide — and that is Allah, glory be to Him and exalted is He. In “with no one to advise” is the denial of any need in Him: His rightness comes from no consultation, no trial and no learning, but from knowledge without beginning and wisdom that does not change. Al-Qushayrī says: Allah, exalted is He, guided the selves of the renouncers to the way of His obedience, the hearts of the knowers to the path of knowing Him, the spirits of the finders to the reality of His love, and the inmost selves of those who affirm His oneness to the prospect of His nearness.
The servant’s share
In the ḥadīth above, the Prophet ﷺ taught Ḥuṣayn, when he became Muslim, to say: “O Allah, inspire me with my right course, and protect me from the evil of my own self.” He joined asking for right course with seeking refuge from the self, for the self is the first thing to turn a servant from his right course. Al-Ghazālī says: each servant’s rightness is in the measure of his being guided, in his plans, to what matches the right in his aims, his religion and his worldly life. Al-Qushayrī says: the sign that the Truth has guided a servant to setting his self right is that he trusts Him well, entrusts his affairs to Him entirely, seeks His choice in every undertaking and His protection in every trouble. The servant’s share in this name is to seek right course from ar-Rashīd, and to settle no matter without asking Him to choose.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif on the verse above: they began to disown their own power and strength and returned to Allah in the truth of their need; so He answered their prayer, lifted their distress, and settled them in the shelter of His keeping, a fair place of rest. The first of right course is to disown your own right course, and then to ask Him to prepare it for you. Whoever knows that He is ar-Rashīd rests in His direction in every way — so Zarrūq explains this name — for he knows that ar-Rashīd’s designs move on to their ends; so he does not resist them, hurry them, or suspect them.
In their own words
He is the One whose designs move on to their ends along the way of rightness, with no one to advise, no one to correct and no one to guide; and that is Allah, glory be to Him and exalted is He. Each servant’s rightness is in the measure of his being guided, in his plans, to what matches the right in his aims, his religion and his worldly life.
Ar-Rashīd: He who guided creatures aright to what is good for them; faʿīl in the sense of mufʿil. It may also mean the Wise in rightness, for the straightness of His design and the aptness of His acts.
So should the servant be when morning comes: he trusts in his Lord, and no undertaking meets him but he flees to Allah, exalted is He, in it, and waits for the pointer that comes to his heart; so he carries out his undertakings, and He suffices him in all his affairs. If he turns back from this after Allah, exalted is He, has guided him to it, He reproaches him, so that he knows there was a lapse of courtesy in him, and he returns from it to his stillness and to leaving his own choosing and contriving. So Allah, exalted is He, guided the selves of the renouncers to the way of His obedience, the hearts of the knowers to the path of knowing Him, the spirits of the finders to the reality of His love, and the inmost selves of those who affirm His oneness to the prospect of His nearness.
