He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. Al-Ḥashr 59:23

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he would ask forgiveness three times and say: “O Allah, You are as-Salām, and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour.” Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 591

The word

Salām and salāmah mean the same — safety, soundness — as riḍāʿ and riḍāʿah both mean nursing. So Allah as as-Salām is the One who possesses soundness, free of all that befalls creatures: passing away, death, lack and flaw. Al-Mubarrad said the word has four uses in Arabic: a Name of Allah; safety; the greeting of peace; and a kind of great tree. Az-Zajjāj traced all four back to soundness: the tree is called salām because it is spared the breaking that befalls slender trees; a ladder is a sullam because it brings the climber safely to where he is going; and Paradise is Dār as-Salām, the Abode of Peace, because whoever reaches it is safe there from death, sickness and sorrow.

Of Him

He is the One whose Essence is sound of every flaw, whose attributes are sound of every lack, and whose acts are sound of pure evil — so there is no soundness anywhere in existence that is not traced back to Him and does not issue from Him. In His Essence the Name is close to al-Quddūs; in His acts it means that the believers are safe from His punishment and from any wrong from Him, and that He greets His friends with peace — with safety in this world and with a greeting in Paradise. That is why the Prophet ﷺ forbade his Companions to say in their prayer, “Peace be upon Allah”, and said: “For Allah is Himself as-Salām.” Peace is not asked for Him; every peace is drawn from Him — as he ﷺ said when he finished each prayer: “O Allah, You are as-Salām, and from You is peace.”

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: every servant whose heart is sound of deceit, rancour, envy and the wish to harm; whose limbs are sound of sin; and whose qualities are sound of being turned upside down — his reason made captive to his desire and his anger — is one who comes to Allah with a sound heart. One of the righteous saw a man backbiting another and asked him, “Did you go out to fight the Romans this year?” “No.” “The Turks, then, or India?” “No.” “So your unbelieving enemies are safe from you, and your Muslim brother is not?” Part of the courtesy of this Name is to spread the greeting of peace among people, and to look for seventy excuses for your brother before you think ill of him — and if you find none, to blame your own self for not accepting seventy excuses from its brother.

A taste

Al-Khaṭṭābī says: when a Muslim greets his brother with “Peace be upon you”, it is as though he tells him he is safe on his side and assures him against any harm or treachery from him — as if saying, “I am at peace with you, not at war; a friend, not an enemy.” Others held that the salām of the greeting is Allah’s Name itself: when a believer says it to his brother he is placing him under Allah’s protection and blessing him by His Name. So the greeting between believers is remembrance of Allah on the tongue and a pact of safety between hearts. Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah said: creation is never lonelier than in three places — the day it is born, the day it dies, and the day it is raised; and Allah honoured Yaḥyā in all three by singling him out for peace. Whoever clings to as-Salām, He keeps safe in every place of loneliness.

In their own words

He is the One whose Essence is sound of every flaw, whose attributes are sound of every lack, and whose acts are sound of evil — so that, He being thus, there is no soundness in existence that is not traced back to Him and does not issue from Him.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 69

Among the courtesies of one who knows this Name is that he return to his Master with a sound heart — and the sound heart is the one free of rancour, deceit, spite and envy. He harbours nothing towards any Muslim but clarity and sincerity, truthfulness and good counsel. He thinks well of all of them and ill of himself: he looks at his own deeds with contempt and at his own words as false, and believes himself the worst of creation. So he sees the elder as better than him, because he knew Allah and obeyed Him first; and he sees the younger as better than him, because he has disobeyed less.

Imam al-Qushayrī, at-Taḥbīr fi-t-Tadhkīr, p. 42

Creation is never more desolate than in three places: the day it is born and sees itself thrust out of where it was; the day it dies and sees people it had never seen before; and the day it is raised and sees itself in a vast gathering. So Allah honoured Yaḥyā in them and singled him out for peace.
