ash-Shahīd

The Witness

From whom nothing is absent; who knows the open as He knows the hidden, and will bear witness over creation

We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness? Fuṣṣilat 41:53

“And you will be asked about me — so what will you say?” They said: “We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust and given sincere counsel.” Then, raising his forefinger toward the sky and pointing it down toward the people, he said: “O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!” — three times. Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1218

The word

Shahīd is faʿīl in the sense of shāhid, as ʿalīm is of ʿālim; and the shāhid is the opposite of the absent — the Arabs say, “so-and-so was a witness to this matter”, meaning he was not away from it, as az-Zajjājī says. Az-Zajjāj says: ash-Shahīd is the One present; “I bore witness to it” comes from shahādah in the sense of being present. Witness to a debt comes from seeing, for it is given only by one who saw the parties; so the account of one who saw, and his telling of what he saw, is called witness. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: ash-Shahīd is the One from whom nothing is absent — as if He were the One present, witnessing, from whom nothing slips away; and ash-Shahīd may mean the Knowing.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: ash-Shahīd goes back in meaning to the Knowing, with a particular relation. Allah is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed: the unseen is what is hidden, the witnessed what is manifest. Knowledge taken without qualification is al-ʿAlīm; related to the unseen and the inner is al-Khabīr; related to the outward is ash-Shahīd — and with it may be taken His bearing witness over creatures on the Day of Resurrection to what He knew and saw of them. Al-Qushayrī says: ash-Shahīd is the One present, and His presence, glory be to Him, means His knowledge, His seeing and His power; and ash-Shāhid and ash-Shahīd may also mean the One who makes the proofs plain and the arguments clear — which is why a witness is called a witness: he makes things plain and clear. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is also the Witness for the wronged who has no witness and no helper, against the transgressing oppressor whom no one restrains in this world — to take the wronged one’s due from him.

The servant’s share

Al-Qushayrī says: when the servant knows that Allah is a Witness who knows his acts and sees his states, He is witness to what he endures for His sake, and what he suffers for His good pleasure grows light. He tells of a man who was being flogged and bore it without crying out. One of the shaykhs said to him: “Does the flogging not hurt you?” He said: “It does.” “Then why do you not cry out?” He said: “Among those present is one I love, who is watching me, and I fear to lose face before him if I cry out.” Al-Qushayrī says: then whoever claims to love the Real, glory be to Him, and cannot bear the nip of an ant or a gnat — how can he be truthful? Of the servant’s share in this Name, too, is to bear true witness even against himself: never hiding testimony he holds, and never testifying to what he has not witnessed.

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says: ash-Shahīd is also the Witnessed, as if His servants witness Him; and the people of knowledge seek no companion but Him and want nothing besides Him, as it was said: “You are my joy, and you are the one I tell my grief; you are my company in the black of night. If I speak, I utter nothing but you; and if I am silent, you are what my heart holds tight.” Al-Ghazālī says: most people see everything but Him, and take what they see as witness to Him; the truthful saints see nothing but Him, and take Him as witness to Himself — and they are the ones addressed by the verse of Fuṣṣilat above. The first see the trace and reason to the One who left it; the second witness Him and see the traces by Him. He is witness enough for whoever witnesses Him.

In their own words

Its meaning goes back to the Knowing, with a particular relation; for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed — the unseen being what is hidden and the witnessed what is manifest, what is seen. When knowledge is taken without qualification, He is al-ʿAlīm; when it is related to the unseen and the inner, He is al-Khabīr; and when it is related to the outward, He is ash-Shahīd. And with that may be taken His bearing witness over creatures on the Day of Resurrection to what He knew and saw of them.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 126

Most people see everything besides Him, and take what they see as witness to Him — and they are the ones addressed by His word “Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created”. The truthful saints see nothing besides Him, and take Him as witness to Himself — and they are the ones addressed by His word “But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?”

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 128

When he knows that Allah, exalted is He, is a Witness who knows his acts and sees his states, He is witness to what he endures for His sake, and what he suffers for His good pleasure grows light for him.
