Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. Al-Baqarah 2:255

“Abu-l-Mundhir, do you know which verse of the Book of Allah that you have with you is the greatest?” I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “Abu-l-Mundhir, do you know which verse of the Book of Allah that you have with you is the greatest?” I said: “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.” He struck me on the chest and said: “By Allah, may knowledge bring you joy, Abu-l-Mundhir!” Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 810

The word

ʿAliyy is of the pattern faʿīl from ʿuluw and ʿalāʾ; ʿalāʾ is loftiness, splendour and majesty. The Arabs say, “so-and-so is ʿaliyy, a man of ʿalāʾ”, when he is majestic, great in standing and rank; and one says in praying for a chief, “may Allah make your command high”, meaning that it be carried out and stand above others, as az-Zajjājī says. Al-ʿAliyy and al-ʿĀlī also mean the one who overpowers and prevails over things: “so-and-so rose over so-and-so” means he overcame him. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-ʿAliyy is the High, the Overpowering, faʿīl in the sense of fāʿil, like qadīr and qādir, ʿalīm and ʿālim; it may be from the height of glory and honour; and it may mean the One who is too high and too majestic for the qualities of creatures to reach Him, or for their imaginings to give Him a manner.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: al-ʿAliyy is the One above whose rank there is no rank, and beneath whom every rank lies. Height is taken from the height that is the opposite of lowness, and it is either in degrees the senses perceive, like steps and stairs, or in ranks the mind understands. Whatever is above in place has height of place; whatever is above in rank has height of rank. Existing things cannot be divided into degrees the mind can rank without the Real, glory be to Him, standing in the highest of them, so that no degree above Him can be conceived: the cause is above what it causes, and being above without qualification belongs only to the Causer of causes; the living is above the dead, the one who perceives by reason above the one who perceives by the senses, the angel above man, man above beast — and Allah above all. He says: once you understand this, you understand what it means that He is above the Throne. The Throne is the greatest of bodies and above them all; and the Being who is beyond being bounded and measured by the bounds and measures of bodies is above all bodies in rank. Al-Qushayrī says: His highness is not the highness of a direction, nor His greatness the greatness of a bulk — glory be to Him above that; His highness is His being worthy of the attributes of majesty and grandeur, and in this sense He has always been high and exalted. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One above whom, in the meanings of majesty that are His by right, there is no one, and with whom there is none to share height.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: a servant cannot be conceived to be high without qualification, for he reaches no degree but that there is something above it in existence — the degrees of the prophets and the angels. Yes, one can be conceived to reach a degree that no one of human kind surpasses — the degree of our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ — but that is height relative to some beings. Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows His highness and grandeur humbles himself and is lowly before Him, and before the righteous, and then Allah raises his worth; the reality of humility is to accept the truth from whoever speaks it, and pride is to deny the truth. Zarrūq notes that one draws near by this Name by raising one’s aspiration to Him, giving one’s choosing over to Him, inclining to the lofty things and keeping far from the petty ones. Height of aspiration, not height of station, is what is asked of the servant.

A taste

Consider how the Law set the remembrance of height in the servant’s lowest posture: the one prostrating, his forehead on the dust, says “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High”; and the Prophet ﷺ said: “The servant is nearest to his Lord when he is prostrating.” The lower the servant goes in body, the higher he rises in heart. Al-Qushayrī says: of His highness and grandeur is that the servants’ magnifying and honouring Him adds nothing to His highness; rather, whomever He grants the grace to honour Him, it is He who has honoured that servant by the grace. Al-Ghazālī says: these words were first set for what the eye perceives, the degree of ordinary people; then, when the elect awoke to what insight perceives, they borrowed the words from it — and those whose perception never went beyond the senses denied it, understanding no greatness but size and no height but place. Whoever rises from the world of the senses to the world of meaning knows that true height is the height of perfection, and that the heart rises only as far as it clings to the Most High.

In their own words

Once you understand the meaning of rational gradation, know that existing things cannot be divided into degrees that differ in the mind without the Real, glory be to Him, standing in the highest of the degrees of their divisions, so that no degree above Him can be conceived. That is the absolutely High; and everything else is high relative to what is beneath it, and low or lowly relative to what is above it.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 107

Once you understand this, you understand the meaning of His being above the Throne: for the Throne is the greatest of bodies and is above all bodies, and the Being who is beyond being bounded and measured by the bounds and measures of bodies is above all bodies in rank.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 108

His highness is not the highness of a direction, nor His greatness the greatness of a bulk — glory be to Him above that. Rather His highness is His being worthy of the attributes of majesty and grandeur; and in this sense He has always been high and exalted.
