ash-Shakūr

The Appreciative

Who repays small obedience with great degrees, and praises His servant for what He Himself gave

That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative. Fāṭir 35:30

“While a man was walking along a road, he found a thorny branch on the way and moved it aside; and Allah thanked him for it, and forgave him.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 654 · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1914

The word

Shakūr is of the pattern faʿūl from shukr, and the root of shukr in speech, az-Zajjāj says, is showing: one speaks of the shakīr of plants, the new growth, and of an udder that shakira when it is full — its fullness being its showing. A beast is shakūr when it shows more fat than the fodder it is given, and a plant shakūr when a little water is enough for it. So Allah’s thanking is His rewarding the thankful for his thanks: He named His reward for thanks, and His acceptance of obedience, “thanks”, by way of correspondence. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is the One who thanks a little obedience and rewards it with much, and gives abundant blessing and is pleased with a little thanks.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: ash-Shakūr is the One who repays small acts of obedience with many degrees, and for work done over a numbered few days gives bliss without limit in the Hereafter. One who repays a good deed many times over is said to have thanked it, and one who praises a doer of good is said to have thanked him. If you look to the sense of repaying with increase, there is no absolutely Appreciative One but Allah, for His increase has no bound — the bliss of the Garden has no end. If you look to the sense of praise: every other praiser praises the act of another, but the Lord, when He praises the works of His servants, praises His own act, for their works are of His creating. If one who gives and then praises is appreciative, then One who gives and then praises the very gift is the more worthy to be called Appreciative. Al-Qushayrī says: what I choose is that the reality of thanks is praising the doer of good by naming his good; so Allah is Shakūr in that He praises His servant much, naming his good acts and his obedience, and gives great reward for a little obedience.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: a servant can be thankful toward another servant, once by praising him for the good he did him, and again by repaying him with more than he did — and that is a praiseworthy trait; the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not thank people does not thank Allah.” But his thanks to Allah can only be so called loosely and by extension: if he praises, his praise falls short; if he obeys, his obedience is another blessing from Allah upon him — indeed his very thanks is another blessing beyond the blessing he thanks for. The finest way of thanking Allah for His blessings is not to use them in disobeying Him but in obeying Him. Al-Qushayrī says: thanks is of kinds. With the body: that you use your limbs only in obeying Him. With the heart: that you busy your heart only with remembering and knowing Him. With the tongue: that you use it only to praise and extol Him. With wealth: that you spend it only in what pleases Him and what He loves. The Prophet ﷺ would stand in prayer at night until his feet swelled, and when this was mentioned to him he said: “Shall I not be a thankful servant?”

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says: one of the knowers said, on how few of the servants are thankful: few are those who see the blessing as from Me — for the reality of thanks is to be absent from seeing the blessing in seeing the Blesser. Of the courtesy of one who knows that He is ash-Shakūr is to strive in thanking Him without flagging, and to keep to His praise without falling short. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: praising Allah as ash-Shakūr may be meant to make people eager for obedience, little or much, so that they do not think a small deed too small, and leave the little when the much is beyond them. Look at the man who moved a thorny branch from people’s way, and Allah thanked him and forgave him: a deed hardly seen, met by the Appreciative with what cannot be measured. The Appreciative sees the atom of your good and makes it grow; the thankful one in you sees the atom of His good and finds it immense. Your thanks to Him is a blessing from Him that calls for another thanks, and so you are never out of blessing and thanks, until you know that you will never reach the thanks He is owed — and that is the summit of thanks.

In their own words

If you look to the sense of repaying with increase, there is no absolutely Appreciative One but Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for His increases in repaying are unconfined and unbounded — the bliss of the Garden has no end, and Allah, glory be to Him, says: “Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past.” And if you look to the sense of praise: every praiser praises the act of another, but the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, when He praises the works of His servants, praises His own act, for their works are of His creating. If one who gave and then praised is appreciative, then One who gave and then praised the one He gave to is the more worthy to be Appreciative.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 105–106

What I choose and accept is that the reality of thanks is praising the doer of good by naming his good. So Allah is Shakūr in that He praises His servant much, naming his good acts and his obedience; and the intensity of thanks in His description means that He gives much reward for little obedience — from their saying “a shakūr beast”, when it shows more fat than the fodder it is given, and “a shakūr plant”, when it thrives on a little water.

Imam al-Qushayrī, at-Taḥbīr fi-t-Tadhkīr, p. 88

He is the One who thanks a little obedience and rewards it with much, and gives abundant blessing and is pleased with a little thanks — as in His words “Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative”. The meaning of the thanks ascribed to Him is being pleased with a little obedience from the servant, accepting it, and making its reward great — and Allah knows best. It may also be that praising Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as ash-Shakūr is meant to make people eager for obedience, little or much, so that they do not think a little work too little, and do not leave the little of it when the much is beyond them.
