The Forbearing

Who sees the sins of the sinners and is not stirred to anger, nor quick to punish, though His power is complete

Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving. Fāṭir 35:41

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say at a time of distress: “There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6346 · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2730

The word

Ḥalīm is the active adjective of ḥaluma, like ẓarufa, ẓarīf and karuma, karīm. The verb takes no object of its own and reaches one through a preposition: ḥaluma ʿan fulān, “he was forbearing toward him”, when he did not meet his wrong in kind or repay him for it, az-Zajjājī says; ḥalama, with a fatḥah, is from dreaming in sleep. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Ḥalīm is the one of pardon and patience whom no anger stirs up, and neither the ignorance of the ignorant nor the sin of the sinner can unsettle; one who pardons out of weakness does not deserve the name — the forbearing one is he who pardons while able. Az-Zajjāj rejected the saying that al-Ḥalīm is one who does not punish: he is the one who does not hasten to punish. It is said that Allah described none of His creatures by a quality dearer than forbearance, when He described Ismāʿīl by it in the good tidings given of him: “So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.” Ibrāhīm had asked his Lord for a child from among the righteous, and was answered with a boy described by forbearance — a sign that forbearance is the highest mark of righteousness.

Of Him

Al-Ghazālī says: al-Ḥalīm is the One who witnesses the disobedience of the disobedient and sees His command defied, and yet no anger stirs Him, no rage comes over Him, and no haste or rashness drives Him to rush to revenge, though His power is complete. Al-Qushayrī says: some have said that forbearance is delaying punishment from one who deserves it, which would make it an attribute of His act; but the people of truth say that His forbearance is His will to delay punishment, and so it is an attribute of His Essence — He has always been forbearing and always will be. So He delays punishment from some who deserve it, and then may punish them or may pass over them, and hastens it for others; and the matter in all this is as the judgment went before in eternity. Al-Ḥalīmī says: al-Ḥalīm is the One who does not withhold His gifts and favours from His servants because of their sins, but provides for the sinner, sunk in his sins, as He provides for the obedient, and shields the heedless one who never remembers Him from harm and calamity as He shields the devout one who asks Him.

The servant’s share

Al-Ghazālī says: the servant’s share in the quality of the Forbearing is plain, for forbearance is among the finest traits of servants, and needs no explaining or dwelling upon. The Prophet ﷺ said to al-Ashajj of ʿAbd al-Qays: “You have two traits that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness,” and he said: “The strong man is not the one who throws others down; the strong man is the one who masters himself when angry.” Forbearance is not weakness: one who pardons because he cannot do otherwise does not deserve its name, as al-Khaṭṭābī says; it is to be able and to forgive, to be provoked and stay calm, to be treated foolishly and answer with forbearance. It is related that al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays, whose forbearance became a proverb, said: “I am not forbearing — I make myself forbearing.” Forbearance begins as an effort and becomes a character. Zarrūq notes that to take on the trait of this Name is to pardon wrongs, to let people off for the ill they do to you — and even to repay them with good.

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says: of His forbearance is that the persistence of sinners does not stir Him; He is forbearing until the ignorant think He does not know, and He veils until it is thought He does not see. Consider how He sealed the verse of holding the heavens and the earth with the name al-Ḥalīm. Al-Māturīdī says: forbearing, in that He did not send the heavens down on them for the enormity of their lie against Allah, and in that He did not hasten their punishment in this world; an-Nasafī says: the two deserved to be shattered to pieces for the enormity of the word of shirk. What holds creation back from vanishing, while servants remain as they are, is His forbearance. Zarrūq notes that whoever knows that He is al-Ḥalīm rests in His forbearance without being deluded by it, so that trust in Him and hope in Him prevail in him; he thanks Him for the favour of His forbearance and returns to Him before His command appears in the next world with His judgment carried out. Forbearance is a respite, not neglect: a door left open for the return, not a veil to be deluded by.

In their own words

He is the One who witnesses the disobedience of the disobedient and sees His command defied, and yet no anger stirs Him, no rage comes over Him, and no haste or rashness drives Him to rush to revenge, though His power is complete.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 103

He is the One of pardon and patience, whom no anger stirs up and whom neither the ignorance of the ignorant nor the sin of the sinner can unsettle. One who pardons out of weakness does not deserve the name of forbearance: the forbearing one is only he who pardons while able, the patient one who does not hasten to punish. One of the poets set this meaning out finely: “No people reach glory, however noble, until they bow, for all their might, to others, and are reviled — and you see their faces shining: not the pardon of the humbled, but the pardon of the forbearing.”

Imam al-Khaṭṭābī, Shaʾn ad-Duʿāʾ, p. 63–64

The people of truth say: His forbearance is His will to delay punishment, and so it is an attribute of His Essence — He has always been forbearing and always will be. He delays punishment from some who deserve it, and then may punish them or may pass over them, and hastens punishment for some; and the matter in that is as the judgment went before in eternity, and as His will and His knowledge were bound to it.
