The Ever-Living
Who has always been and always been living: life did not come to Him after death, and death does not come to Him after life
The word
Ḥayy in the speech of the Arabs is the opposite of dead, as animal life is the opposite of lifeless matter, and the Arabs know no other sense of ḥayy and ḥayāh, as az-Zajjājī says; one says a man is “alive of heart” when he is spirited and quick, and “dead of heart” when he is dull. Az-Zajjāj says: al-Ḥayy tells of lasting existence — Allah has always existed and will always exist. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Ḥayy, as Allah’s attribute, is the One who has always existed and always been described by life: life did not come to Him after death, and death does not come upon Him after life; every other living thing has death or non-being at one end of its life, or at both.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: the living is the one who acts and perceives, so that whatever has no act at all and no perception is dead. The least degree of perception is that the perceiver be aware of itself; what is not aware of itself is inert and dead. The perfectly and absolutely Living is the One under whose perception all things perceivable fall, and under whose act all existing things fall, so that nothing perceivable escapes His knowledge and nothing done escapes His act — and that is Allah, exalted is He: He is the absolutely Living. Every other living thing lives in the measure of its perceiving and acting, and all of that is hemmed in by littleness. Al-Qushayrī says: Allah, exalted is He, is living, and His life is an attribute of His Essence, beyond His lasting: He is the everlasting One, whom no passing can reach. Al-Ḥalīmī says: the name is His because action by choice comes only from the living, and Allah’s acts issue from Him by His choice.
The servant’s share
Al-Ghazālī says under al-Bāʿith: ignorance is the greater death and knowledge the nobler life. So the servant’s share in the name al-Ḥayy is to bring himself to life with knowledge and action: the wider his perception of what benefits him, and his doing of what pleases his Lord, the more alive he is. Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows that He is the Living who does not die does not lean on any creature; for one who leans on a creature and relies on him for his time of need may find him gone just when he needs him, and his hope and expectation are lost. That is why the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to rely on the Living who does not die, as in the verse above.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says: it is told that a man said, “My friend so-and-so has died, and I have wept over him long.” He was told: “The fault is yours, for you loved a living one who dies. Why did you not love the Living who does not die, and spare yourself weeping over Him?” One of them said: “With death in it, the world is worth nothing.” Another said: “No — without death in it, the world would be worth nothing”; he meant that since the servant’s reaching his Master depends on his death, his death is among the blessings. So it was said: death is a bridge that brings the lover to the Beloved. When some matter distressed the Prophet ﷺ he called on the Living, the Self-Sustaining; and whoever calls on the Living, his heart does not die.
In their own words
He is the One who acts and perceives, so that whatever has no act at all and no perception is dead. The least degree of perception is that the perceiver be aware of itself; what is not aware of itself is the inert and the dead. The perfectly and absolutely Living is the One under whose perception all things perceivable fall, and under whose act all existing things fall, so that nothing perceivable escapes His knowledge and nothing done escapes His act — and that is Allah, Mighty and Majestic: He is the absolutely Living. Every living thing besides Him lives in the measure of its perceiving and its acting, and all of that is hemmed in by littleness.
Al-Ḥayy, as the attribute of Allah, exalted is He, is the One who has always existed and always been described by life: life did not come to Him after death, and death does not come upon Him after life. All other living things have death or non-being come upon them at one of the two ends of life, or at both together.
Whoever knows that He is the Living who does not die does not lean on any creature; for one who leans on a creature and relies on him for his time of need may find him perished at the very time he needs him, and his hope and expectation are lost.
