al-Qayyūm
The Self-Sustaining
Who stands by Himself, and by whom everything that exists stands: nothing can be, or go on being, except by Him
The word
Qayyūm is of the pattern fayʿūl from qāma, yaqūmu, a form of intensity in the act; its root form is qaywūm, the wāw turned to yāʾ after the unvowelled yāʾ and merged with it; qayyām is the same, and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb is reported to have recited “al-Ḥayy al-Qayyām”, as az-Zajjājī and az-Zajjāj say. One says qumtu bi-sh-shayʾ when one takes charge of a thing with care and for its good, as al-Khaṭṭābī says; “so-and-so yaqūmu bi the affairs of such-and-such a tribe” means he answers for their affairs and looks after them. Abū ʿUbaydah says: al-Qayyūm is al-Qāʾim, the Lasting who does not cease; az-Zajjāj says it is from qāma in the sense of lasting, not standing up as the word is usually known.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: things divide into what needs a substrate — accidents and qualities — of which it is said that they do not stand by themselves; and what needs no substrate and is said to stand by itself, like substances. Yet a substance, though it stands by itself without needing a substrate, does not stand free of things its existence cannot do without. If there is in existence a Being whose Essence suffices Itself, who stands by nothing else, and whose lasting depends on the existence of nothing else, He is the absolutely Self-Standing; and if, beyond that, everything that exists stands by Him, so that nothing can be conceived to exist or to go on existing except by Him, He is al-Qayyūm — for He stands by His own Essence and everything stands by Him. And that is Allah alone. Al-Qushayrī says: al-Qayyūm is the intensive of the one who sees to things; in describing Him it means the One who orders and takes charge of all that happens in the world. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One who stands over every one of His creatures, ordering it as He wills.
The servant’s share
Al-Ghazālī says: the servant enters into this quality in the measure of his needing nothing besides Allah, exalted is He. Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows that He is the One who sees to all things is at rest from the toil of planning and the weariness of busying himself with anything else; he lives with a rested soul, and the world has no worth for him. And of his share is to see to what he has been set over — people’s trusts and rights, his home, his work and those he supports — as one who knows that al-Qayyūm is standing over him.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says: the great ones said, all the treasures of this world and the next are less before Allah than a single straw before a sultan — and whoever asks a sultan for the gift of a straw has aimed low. Whoever knows al-Qayyūm asks Him for nothing but Himself. In the ḥadīth of Asmāʾ bint Yazīd, the Greatest Name of Allah is in two verses, one of them the opening of Āl ʿImrān, where the Name Allah stands with al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm — and with the Greatest Imam, Abū Ḥanīfa, Allah be pleased with him, the Greatest Name is “Allah”. When some matter distressed the Prophet ﷺ he called, “O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining” — as though the heart, when every means has failed it, finds nothing to stand by but al-Qayyūm. Everything stands by Him with every breath; were He to leave it to itself for the blink of an eye, it would not be. All existence is a standing without end before al-Qayyūm, and it stands only by Him.
In their own words
If there is in existence a Being whose Essence suffices Itself, who stands by nothing else, and whose lasting in existence depends on the existence of nothing else, He is the Self-Standing without qualification. And if, beyond that, everything that exists stands by Him, so that nothing can be conceived to exist, or to go on existing, except by Him, He is al-Qayyūm — for He stands by His Essence and everything stands by Him; and that is none but Allah, glory be to Him and exalted. The servant enters into this quality in the measure of his needing nothing besides Allah, exalted is He.
Al-Qayyūm is the One who stands and lasts without ceasing; its pattern is fayʿūl, from standing, and it is an intensive of standing over a thing. It is said: He is the One who stands over everything, tending it. And one says qumtu bi-sh-shayʾ when one takes charge of a thing with care and for its good.
Whoever knows that He is the One who sees to all things is at rest from the toil of planning and the weariness of busying himself with anything else; he lives with a rested soul, and the world has no worth for him. The great ones said: all the treasures of this world and the next are less before Allah, exalted is He, than a single straw before a sultan; and whoever asks a sultan to give him a straw has aimed low.
