The Gatherer
Who gathers creation for the Day of Gathering after its limbs are scattered; who joins the alike, the unlike and the opposed; who gathers the hearts of His friends upon Himself
The word
Jāmiʿ is the active participle of jamaʿa, yajmaʿu. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is the One who gathers creation for a Day about which there is no doubt — after souls have left bodies, after limbs and companions have been scattered — to repay those who did evil for what they did and those who did good with the best; and it is said: al-Jāmiʿ is the One who has gathered every excellence and holds every noble trait and honour. Az-Zajjāj says: al-Jāmiʿ is Allah, exalted is He, who gathers creation for the Reckoning. The name comes in the verse of Āl ʿImrān above on the tongue of those firm in knowledge, as supplication and as confession.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: al-Jāmiʿ is the One who joins together the alike, the unlike and the opposed. The alike — as when He gathers the multitude of mankind on the face of the earth, and assembles them on the plain of the Resurrection. The unlike — as when He brings together the heavens and the stars, the air and the earth, the seas, animals, plants and the many minerals, and joins bone and sinew, vein and muscle, marrow, skin and blood in a living body. And beyond that He holds together, in one body, things that repel and oppose one another — the utmost form of gathering. Al-Qushayrī says: al-Jāmiʿ, as His description, means the One who assembles creation and raises it on the Day of Resurrection, gathering on that Day their scattered flesh, their torn skins and their crumbled bones; and He gathers likes and kinds, the different and the opposed, in their forms, colours, tastes and scents, so that a lifetime would not suffice to go through them one by one.
The servant’s share
Al-Ghazālī says: the gatherer among servants is one who joins the outward courtesies of the limbs with the inward realities of the heart. Whoever is perfect in knowledge and fine in conduct is a gatherer; so it is said, the perfect one is he whose light of knowledge does not put out the light of his scrupulousness; and the gatherer is one who joins patience with insight. In the ḥadīth above, a person is with those he loves: al-Jāmiʿ will gather every heart tomorrow with what it gathered itself upon today. Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif: corruption gathers the corrupt though their homes be far apart, and uprightness gathers the upright though their lands be distant. The servant’s share in this name is to gather his aspiration upon his Lord, and to choose those with whom he would be raised — and love them now.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif on the verse of Āl ʿImrān: today, the gathering of the beloved on the carpet of nearness; tomorrow, the gathering of all for reward and punishment. And in ar-Risālah, from his shaykh Abū ʿAlī ad-Daqqāq: separation (farq) is what is ascribed to you, and gathering (jamʿ) is what is taken from you. The servant must have both: whoever has no separation has no servanthood, and whoever has no gathering has no knowledge of Allah. “You alone we worship” points to separation; “and You alone we ask for help” points to gathering. So al-Jāmiʿ gathers the servant’s scattered heart, until he sees all causes coming from one Hand; then He returns him to separation, to stand in the duties of servanthood — so that gathering never takes him out of the Law, nor separation veil him from the Lord.
In their own words
The gatherer among servants is one who joins the outward courtesies of the limbs with the inward realities of the heart. Whoever is perfect in knowledge and fine in conduct is the gatherer; so it is said, the perfect one is he whose light of knowledge does not put out the light of his scrupulousness. And joining patience with insight is hard to come by: you see one patient in renunciation and scrupulousness who has no insight, and one of insight who has no patience; and the gatherer is one who joins patience with insight.
And He is the One who gathers the hearts of His friends to behold His decree, so that they are freed from what scatters them; their life grows sweet, for they do not see the go-betweens, and they look at events only with the eye of the decree: if it is a blessing, they know that Allah, exalted is He, is its Giver; and if it is a trial, they know that He is its Remover.
Today, the gathering of the beloved on the carpet of nearness; tomorrow, the gathering of all for the place of reward and punishment.
