al-Khāliq
The Creator
Who measures all things out before they are, and brings them forth without precedent
The word
The root of khalq in Arabic is measuring out: khalaqtu al-adīm means “I measured the leather before cutting it”, and the Arabs called a shoemaker khāliq for the way he measures out a sandal. Zuhayr praised a man: “You cut through what you measure, while some men measure and never cut” — that is, when you plan a thing you carry it through, while others plan and never act. So a lie is called mukhtalaq, because it was measured to look like the truth. In Allah’s Name, khalq is the first measuring-out of what is to come into being, and its bringing forth: He originates creation and invents it without any model before it. The word is not used of anyone else except in the limited sense of measuring and shaping.
Of Him
One might think al-Khāliq, al-Bāriʾ and al-Muṣawwir are synonyms that all come back to creating and inventing; they are not. Al-Ghazālī shows that everything that passes from non-existence into existence needs, first, to be measured out; second, to be brought into being in accordance with that measure; and third, to be given its form once it exists. Allah is al-Khāliq as the One who measures out, al-Bāriʾ as the One who invents and brings into being, and al-Muṣawwir as the One who arranges the forms of what He has invented in the finest order. Think of a building: it needs an architect to plan it, a builder to raise it and a craftsman to adorn it — but it is not so with Allah’s acts: He is the Planner, the Maker and the Adorner at once. Al-Ḥalīmī says: al-Khāliq is the One who sorted what He originated into kinds and gave each kind its measure — so among them are small and great, tall and short, human and beast, the bird and the lifeless.
The servant’s share
The servant has no part in the meaning of al-Khāliq except by a distant figure of speech, al-Ghazālī says. Creating and bringing into being come back to using power as knowledge directs, and Allah has created in the servant some knowledge and some power; so one who, in struggling with his self and in guiding others, reaches the point of discovering ways of goodness no one found before, and has the power to practise them and draw others to them, is like an inventor of something that did not exist before. As for the courtesy of one who knows that Allah is the Creator, al-Qushayrī says: let him look closely at the mastery of His making, until the signs of His wisdom shine in his heart — knowing that He made him a human being from a drop, put together his limbs and ordered his parts in the finest composition and the best arrangement. And part of that courtesy is never to despise anything He has made, for despising the work is slighting the Maker.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī tells of a companion of ash-Shiblī: “I was with him when he was given a fine handkerchief. He passed a dead dog and said to me: Shroud this dog in the handkerchief and bury it. When I asked him why, he said: When I passed it I found it filthy and ugly, and a call came in my inmost: Did We not create it? So I told you to do that in expiation for what crossed my mind.” Whoever witnesses the Creator in every creature sees beauty where others see ugliness, for he sees the trace of the Maker and not only the thing made. The Prophet ﷺ taught his community to open the Master of Seeking Forgiveness by confessing that they are created: “You created me, and I am Your servant.” The beginning of knowledge is to know that you are created; its end is to live as one who is.
In their own words
It may be thought that these Names are synonyms, all going back to creating and inventing. It should not be so. Rather, everything that comes out of non-existence into existence needs, first, to be measured out; second, to be brought into being in accordance with the measure; and third, to be given form after being brought into being. Allah is Creator in that He measures out, Originator in that He invents and brings into being, and Fashioner in that He arranges the forms of what He has invented in the finest order.
Among the courtesies of one who knows that He is the Creator: that he look closely at the mastery of His creation, so that the signs of His wisdom in His making shine upon his heart; and he knows that He created him from a drop as a human being, put together his limbs and ordered his parts in the finest composition and the best arrangement — “So blessed is Allah, the best of creators”.
So creation, in the Name of Allah, is the first measuring-out of what comes into being: Allah is its Creator and its Originator, and He is the One who completes it and orders it.
