al-Wadūd
The Loving
Who loves good for all creatures and does good to them; who loves His friends and makes them loved by His creation
The word
Wadūd is taken from wudd, love, and has two senses, as al-Khaṭṭābī says. One is that faʿūl stands for mafʿūl — as a man is hayūb, held in awe, and a horse rakūb, ridden — so that Allah, glory be to Him, is the Beloved in the hearts of His friends, for the kindness they come to know from Him and His many favours to them. The other is that al-Wadūd means the One who loves: He loves His righteous servants, in that He is pleased with them and accepts their works; and it may mean that He makes them loved by His creatures. Al-Ḥalīmī says: some say He is the One who loves the people of obedience — pleased with them for their works, good to them for their sake and praising them for them; and some say He is al-Wadūd by the abundance of His kindness — the One who deserves to be loved, and so worshipped and praised.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: al-Wadūd is the One who loves good for all creatures, and so does good to them and praises them. It is close in meaning to ar-Raḥīm, but mercy is toward one shown mercy, and the one shown mercy is the needy and desperate: the acts of the Merciful call for someone weak to be shown mercy, while the acts of the Loving do not — blessing, unasked, is itself a fruit of love. And as His mercy means His willing good for the one shown mercy and His sufficing him, while He is beyond the tenderness of mercy, so His love is His willing honour and blessing, His kindness and His favour, while He is beyond the inclining of affection. The benefit is the kernel of mercy and love and their spirit, and that is what can be conceived of Allah. Al-Qushayrī says: Allah’s love for the servant is His mercy to him and His blessing on him, or His praise and commendation of him: in the sense of mercy, praise and commendation it is an attribute of His Essence; in the sense of blessing and kindness it is an attribute of His act.
The servant’s share
Al-Ghazālī says: the loving one among Allah’s servants is he who wants for Allah’s creatures all that he wants for himself; and higher than that is he who prefers them to himself, like the one of them who said: “I would like to be a bridge over the Fire, for creatures to cross over me and not be hurt by it.” The perfection of it is that neither anger nor rancour nor the harm he has suffered keeps him from preferring others and doing good. The Prophet ﷺ told of a prophet whose people struck him and made him bleed, and he wiped the blood from his face, saying: “O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.” Al-Qushayrī says: the servant’s love for Allah is his obedience to Him and his keeping to His command, or his magnifying Him and the awe of Him in his heart.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says: the people of reality agree that every love that looks to a return is flawed; true love is the love that is clear of all craving. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Wadūd may mean that He makes His righteous servants loved by His creatures — and in the ḥadīth, when Allah loves a servant He calls Jibrīl, and then acceptance is set down for him on earth. Whoever tastes this Name knows that love begins with Him: He loved first and so was loved; He cast affection into hearts. So the servant does not seek the love of creatures but the love of al-Wadūd — and when He loves him, everything loves him. One whom al-Wadūd loves need not buy love with a return; and one who loves al-Wadūd asks no price for his love.
In their own words
He is the One who loves good for all creatures, and so does good to them and praises them. It is close in meaning to ar-Raḥīm; but mercy is related to one shown mercy, and the one shown mercy is the needy and the desperate: the acts of the Merciful call for someone weak to be shown mercy, while the acts of the Loving do not call for that — rather, blessing given unasked is among the fruits of love.
The loving one among Allah’s servants is he who wants for Allah’s creatures all that he wants for himself; and higher than that is he who prefers them to himself, like the one of them who said: “I would like to be a bridge over the Fire, for creatures to cross over me and not be hurt by it.”
The people of reality agree that every love that comes from looking to a return is flawed; rather, true love is the love that is clear of every craving.
