Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. Al-Mujādilah 58:11

Charity has never lessened wealth; Allah increases a servant who forgives in nothing but honour; and no one humbles himself for Allah but Allah raises him. Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2588 · Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 2029

The word

Rāfiʿ is the active participle of rafaʿa, and rafʿ is the opposite of khafḍ: it is lifting up and making prominent — one raises a thing, raises one’s voice, and “raises” a report when one traces it back to the one who said it; so rifʿah is high standing. Ar-Rāfiʿ is among the Names in at-Tirmidhī’s list, and the Qurʾān speaks of the acts that tell of it: raising the believers and the people of knowledge by degrees, as in the verse given here, raising righteous deeds up to Him, and raising the sky without pillars. Its courtesy is to join it to al-Khāfiḍ, for His raising and His lowering are the two pans of one scale.

Of Him

Al-Khaṭṭābī says: ar-Rāfiʿ is the One who raised His friends through obedience — He lifts their ranks, gives them victory over His enemies and makes the final outcome theirs; no one rises unless Allah raises him, and no one is brought low unless He sets him down. Al-Ghazālī says: He raises the believers with happiness and His friends by bringing them near; and whoever raises his seeing above what is sensed and imagined, and his will above blameworthy appetites, He has raised to the horizon of the angels brought near. Al-Qushayrī says: both are qualities of His acts — He raises whom He wills with His favour, and lowers whom He wills with His retribution. Raising in character and in the inner qualities is the reality, and in this world a figure: whoever purifies his self and cleanses his traits is the one truly raised, even if among people he is unknown.

The servant’s share

The servant’s share of this Name is to raise the truth and its people: to raise scholars and the righteous by honouring them, to raise the wronged by helping them, to raise the one who has stumbled by forgiving his slip, and to raise his own aspiration above petty things. The Prophet ﷺ told us that no one humbles himself for Allah but Allah raises him: the road to height is humility, as the road to falling is pride. Al-Qushayrī says: know that whoever makes himself low for Allah in this world, Allah raises in the next. So whoever wants ar-Rāfiʿ to raise him, let him lay his forehead on the ground — for the Prophet ﷺ said: “The nearest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating.”

A taste

Al-Qushayrī tells of a man who saw someone standing in the air and asked him, “How did you reach this station?” He said: “I put the craving of my self (hawā) beneath my feet, and the air (hawāʾ) was made to serve me.” It is a gentle allusion: whoever puts his craving under his feet is raised above what he seeks, and whoever lifts his craving over his head falls beneath it. True height is that He raises you to Himself, not that He raises you in the eyes of people: how many are raised among people and lowered with Allah, and how many are unknown on earth and known in heaven.

In their own words

Two of His Names, which the report has brought; both are qualities of His act. He raises whom He wills with His favour, and lowers whom He wills with His retribution. It has been said: whoever is content with less than his due, Allah raises above his furthest reach.
