al-Khāfiḍ

The One Who Lowers

Who brings the proud low, and lowers and raises the scale with justice

When the Occurrence occurs, there is, at its occurrence, no denial. It will bring down some and raise up others. Al-Wāqiʿah 56:1-3

Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not sleep, and it is not fitting for Him to sleep. He lowers the scale and raises it. The deeds of the night are raised to Him before the deeds of the day, and the deeds of the day before the deeds of the night… Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 179 · Sunan Ibn Mājah 195

The word

Khafḍ is the opposite of rafʿ, raising: it is setting down, lowering — one lowers a voice, and “lowers one’s wing”, which means gentleness and humility; in grammar khafḍ is the genitive case. The word al-Khāfiḍ does not occur in the Qurʾān as such; what occurs is “lowering, raising” as a description of the Event, meaning that it will bring down people who were high in this world and raise people who were low in it; the Name is in the list of the Names in at-Tirmidhī. Its courtesy is that of al-Qābiḍ and al-Bāsiṭ: to join it to ar-Rāfiʿ and name the two together, as al-Khaṭṭābī says — for lowering alone suggests nothing but humiliation, while the two together tell of wisdom and justice.

Of Him

Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Khāfiḍ is the One who brings down the tyrants and humbles the proud pharaohs. Al-Ghazālī says: He lowers the unbelievers with wretchedness and His enemies by putting them far from Him; and whoever confines his seeing to what the senses grasp, and his aspiration to the appetites he shares with beasts, He has lowered to the low — and only Allah does that. Al-Qushayrī says: raising and lowering in worldly things is a figure of speech; in matters of religion — in character and inner qualities — it is the reality. Whoever buries his self in the filth of its traits, and is made captive by his appetites and whims, is the one truly lowered, however high he stands in this world. And the Prophet ﷺ told us that Allah does not sleep; He lowers the scale and raises it. Every lowering from Him is justice weighed in a balance, in which no one is shortchanged in the least.

The servant’s share

The servant’s share of this Name, al-Ghazālī says, is to lower falsehood and raise the truth: to help the one in the right, restrain the one in the wrong, befriend Allah’s friends to raise them, and oppose Allah’s enemies to bring them down. And the first thing he lowers is his own commanding self: he lowers its pride, lowers its voice when it is angry, lowers his wing to the believers, and lowers his gaze from what is forbidden. Whoever lowers himself for Allah, Allah raises; whoever raises himself, He lowers. The lowering a servant chooses for himself in humility is the highest of his stations.

A taste

Al-Qushayrī says: whoever is content with less than his due, Allah raises above his furthest hope. He tells of a woman who used to sweep the mosques and was called Miskīnah, “the poor one”. She was seen in a dream and asked, “How are you, Miskīnah?” She said: “Far from it — the poor one is gone!” Al-Khāfiḍ lowers whoever makes himself great, and raises whoever makes himself low before Him. Whoever tastes this Name loves to be low on the earth, for he knows that water gathers only in low places, and that mercy comes down on broken hearts as rain comes down into the valleys and not on the hilltops.

In their own words

He is the One who lowers the unbelievers with wretchedness and raises the believers with happiness, who raises His friends by bringing them near and lowers His enemies by putting them far. Whoever raises his seeing above what is sensed and imagined, and his will above blameworthy appetites, He has raised to the horizon of the angels brought near; and whoever confines his seeing to what is sensed and his aspiration to the appetites he shares with beasts, He has lowered to the low. None does that but Allah; so He is the Lowerer, the Raiser.

Imam al-Ghazālī, al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, p. 88–89

Al-Khāfiḍ is the One who lowers the tyrants and humbles the proud pharaohs; and ar-Rāfiʿ is the One who raised His friends through obedience — He lifts their ranks, gives them victory over His enemies and makes the final outcome theirs. No one rises unless Allah raises him, and no one is brought low unless He sets him down and lowers him.

Imam al-Khaṭṭābī, Shaʾn ad-Duʿāʾ, p. 58

Know that raising and lowering in worldly matters is figurative, and in religious matters — such as character and the inner qualities — it is real. So whoever purifies his self and cleanses his traits is the one truly raised; and whoever buries his self in the filth of his traits, made captive by his appetites and his whims, is the forsaken, the one brought low.
