ar-Raḥmān
The All-Merciful
Whose mercy has embraced all things
The word
It is on the pattern faʿlān, which in Arabic carries fullness and excess: ghaḍbān is one brimming with anger, ʿaṭshān one parched with thirst. Ar-Raḥmān is the One brimming with mercy, who possesses it to the utmost, whose mercy has encompassed all things. So the word is never made dual or plural, and no one but Allah is ever called by it. Some claimed it has no root, because the Arabs balked at the name when they first heard it, as the Qurʾān records; but most scholars hold that it comes from raḥmah, built for intensity — and the ḥadīth qudsī given here bears them out, for in it Allah says He took the name of the womb-tie, ar-raḥim, from His Name ar-Raḥmān.
Of Him
Ar-Raḥmān is more particular than ar-Raḥīm, which is why Allah pairs it with His own Name in the verse of al-Isrāʾ given here: in that respect it runs almost as a proper name. It is particular in the naming and universal in the meaning. His mercy under this Name is all-embracing: it has reached creatures in their provision, their livelihood and every good of theirs, and it has covered believer and unbeliever, the righteous and the corrupt alike. Al-Ghazālī saw in it a mercy far beyond anything servants can do: He turns to His servants in tenderness, first by bringing them into being, second by guiding them to faith and to the means of happiness, third by making them happy in the Hereafter, and fourth by granting them the sight of His noble Face. Existence itself is the first of His mercies; no breath passes through any creature’s chest that is not part of its overflow.
The servant’s share
The servant’s share of this Name, al-Ghazālī says, is to have mercy on Allah’s heedless servants: to turn them from the road of heedlessness towards Allah with counsel and good advice, by gentleness and not by harshness; to look at those who disobey with the eye of mercy, not the eye of contempt; and to feel every sin committed in the world as though it were a calamity that had struck him. The merciful soul’s mercy is wide, like its Lord’s: it does not keep it for the near and deny it to the far, or give it to those who agree and withhold it from those who differ. It keeps the ties of kinship even when others cut them, for the womb-tie takes its name from ar-Raḥmān. And the greatest mercy of all is to lead someone heedless back to his Lord.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī speaks of the two Names almost in song: ar-Raḥmān is in what He refreshes, ar-Raḥīm in what He lets gleam; ar-Raḥmān in the unveiling of His self-disclosure, ar-Raḥīm in the gentleness of His care. And he says: it is by His mercy that the servant came to know He is ar-Raḥmān — without His mercy no one would ever have known it. Your very knowing of ar-Raḥmān is a mercy from ar-Raḥmān; He came to you before you ever set out towards Him. Whoever tastes this Name is filled with intimacy and hope, and rests in his Lord as a child rests in its mother’s lap — yet it is an intimacy that never forgets its manners, for ar-Raḥmān is the One who taught the Qurʾān, and part of His mercy is that He taught you how to stand at His door.
In their own words
Ar-Raḥmān is the One who turns in tenderness to His servants: first by bringing them into being; second by guiding them to faith and to the means of happiness; third by making them happy in the Hereafter; and fourth by favouring them with the sight of His noble Face.
Because He is ar-Raḥmān, He provided for all of them whatever brings their outward selves ease; because He is ar-Raḥīm, He granted the believers what gives their inmost selves life. So ar-Raḥmān is in what He refreshes, and ar-Raḥīm in what He lets gleam: the refreshing is with kindnesses, the gleaming with lights.
Ar-Raḥmān is the Possessor of the all-embracing mercy that has reached creation in their provision, the means of their living and their welfare, and that has covered the believer and the unbeliever, the righteous and the corrupt.
