aẓ-Ẓāhir

The Manifest

Manifest in His signs and in proofs plain to the mind; high over all things in might and dominion — nothing is more manifest than He

He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing. Al-Ḥadīd 57:3

We were with the Prophet ﷺ when he looked at the moon one night — the full moon — and said: “You will see your Lord as you see this moon, with no crowding to see Him. So if you are able not to be overcome in the prayer before the sun rises and the prayer before it sets, then do so.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 554 · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 633

The word

Az-Zajjāj says: aẓ-Ẓāhir is the One who is manifest to minds through His proofs, the evidences of His being and the signs of His oneness — if you take it from “being manifest.” If you take it from the Arabs’ saying “so-and-so ẓahara on the roof,” meaning he climbed it, it is from height: Allah, exalted is He, is high over all things; yet height here does not mean a raised place, for Allah is too majestic for place and location — the height is height of rank and loftiness of dominion. Al-Qushayrī says: aẓ-Ẓāhir, as His description, means the One who masters His creation, from the saying “so-and-so ẓahara over so-and-so,” that is, overpowered him. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: manifestness may mean height, and it may mean prevailing.

Of Him

Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He is the Manifest in His dazzling proofs, His shining evidences and the witnesses of His signs that point to His lordship and the truth of His oneness; and He is manifest above all things by His power. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One evident through His acts, so that with them His being cannot be denied nor His reality rejected. Al-Ghazālī says: manifest and hidden are only in relation to perceptions; Allah, glory be to Him, is hidden if sought through the senses and the store of imagination, and manifest if sought through the store of the intellect by way of inference. Were you to see a single written word, you would have certainty of a writer who knows, is able and lives; and there is not an atom in the heavens and the earth that does not witness to its own need of One who ordered it. And the Prophet’s ﷺ words “there is nothing above You” mean, as al-Qurṭubī says in al-Mufhim: nothing overpowers You.

The servant’s share

Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif: whoever has his heart ruled by His name the Manifest is taken up with thanks for what is running in the present moment: success in doing good, the reality of faith, fine sufficiency and good care. The servant’s share in this name is to read his Lord’s signs in all he sees, so that his eye falls on nothing without knowing His handiwork in it; and to give thanks for manifest blessings while they are in his hands, before their loss teaches him their worth. In the ḥadīth above is a fine courtesy: the Prophet ﷺ promised the believers the sight of their Lord, and then bade them guard the prayers of dawn and afternoon. Whoever hopes to be honoured with the gaze tomorrow, let him keep his standing before Him today.

A taste

In this abode the Manifest is manifest to hearts through His signs and veiled from eyes by His majesty; in the abode to come He honours His friends with the sight of Him, as the Prophet ﷺ promised them — and that is the belief of Ahl as-Sunnah, without encompassing and without “how.” Al-Qushayrī says in at-Taḥbīr: the Manifest in His blessing, the Manifest in sufficing, the Manifest in glorifying; and in his Laṭāʾif: the Manifest in His care, the Manifest in that He cared for you, the Manifest so that nothing is hidden of the majesty of His might. Whoever witnesses the Manifest needs no proof of Him; rather he comes to take Him as the proof of all things. Whoever still needs a proof needs it for the weakness of his sight, not for any hiddenness in what is seen.

In their own words

Were you to see a single written word, you would gain a decisive certainty of a writer for it who knows, is able, hears, sees and lives, though nothing points to him but the form of one word. And as this word bears decisive witness to the attributes of the writer, so there is not an atom in the heavens and the earth — sphere and star, sun and moon, animal and plant, quality and qualified — that does not witness to its own need of One who ordered it, measured it and singled it out for its particular qualities. Indeed, a man cannot look at one limb of his own body, or one part of it, outward or inward — no, not at one quality of his, or one of the states that run over him by force and without his choosing — without seeing it speak its witness to its Creator, its Master and its Disposer; and so with all he perceives with all his senses, in himself and outside himself.

Aẓ-Ẓāhir is the One who is manifest to minds through His proofs, the evidences of His being and the signs of His oneness — if you take it from being manifest. If you take it from the Arabs’ saying “so-and-so ẓahara on the roof,” when he climbed it, and from the poet’s saying “and that is a reproach whose shame stays clear of you,” then it is from height. Allah, exalted is He, is high over all things; but height does not mean a raised place, for Allah, exalted is He, is too majestic for place and location — the height is only height of rank and loftiness of dominion.

Abū Isḥāq az-Zajjāj, Tafsīr Asmāʾ Allāh al-Ḥusnā, p. 60

And whoever has his heart ruled by His name “the Manifest” is taken up with thanks for what is running in the present moment: the success of doing good, the reality of faith, fine sufficiency and good care.
