Dhu-l-Jalāl wa-l-Ikrām
Lord of Majesty and Generosity
To whom belongs all majesty and perfection, and from whom flows every honour and every gift; who deserves to be held in awe and never denied, and honoured and never disbelieved
The word
Al-Khaṭṭābī says: jalāl is the verbal noun of jalīl — one says “jalīl, of evident jalālah and jalāl”; and ikrām is the verbal noun of akrama, yukrimu. Az-Zajjāj says: jalālah and jalāl are one, both the verbal noun of a man who is jalīl. The name comes in the verse of al-Raḥmān above as a description of your Lord’s Face, which remains when all on the earth have passed; and the sūrah closes with it describing His blessed Name. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: it may be that one of the two, majesty, belongs to Allah as His attribute, and the other belongs to the servant as his act — as in the verse of al-Muddaththir, where one of the two, forgiveness, goes to Allah and the other, fear of Him, to His servants.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: He is the One to whom belongs every majesty and every perfection, and from whom proceeds every honour and every noble gift: majesty is His in Himself, and honour overflows from Him onto His creation, and the kinds of His honouring His creatures can hardly be counted or brought to an end. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: the meaning is that Allah deserves to be held in majesty and honoured, and never denied or disbelieved; and it may mean that He honours the people of His friendship and raises their degrees by granting them His obedience in this world, and holds them in honour by accepting their deeds and raising their degrees in the Gardens. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One who deserves to be held in awe for His dominion, and praised as befits His lofty standing. Al-Qushayrī says: the majesty of Allah, glory be to Him, is not by helpers and supporters or any means, but the majesty of His being — by the attribute to which height, might and every quality of loftiness belong.
The servant’s share
Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows His majesty is humbled and lowly before Him. Ikrām is close to inʿām, blessing, but narrower: He blesses some whom He does not honour, and honours none but those He blesses. For all the servant’s falling short, the Real blesses him while he complains to another, provides for him while he serves another and asks of another. Shaykh Zarrūq says: whoever knows that He is the Lord of Majesty and Generosity stays between fear and hope, thanks and a constant taking of refuge. The servant’s share in this name is to hold awe and intimacy together in his heart — to revere his Lord so that he never grows bold against Him, and to hope for His generosity so that he never despairs of Him — and to honour whomever Allah has honoured, holding no believer in contempt.
A taste
In the ḥadīth above, the Prophet ﷺ said the man had called on Allah by His great Name, which, when He is called by it, He answers — one of the ḥadīths on the Greatest Name. The first thing he opened his supplication with was “Allāhumma” — whose root, as al-Ṭaḥāwī notes in Mushkil al-Āthār, is “Yā Allāh,” the yāʾ dropped and a mīm put in its place. That is why al-Ṭaḥāwī said the reports on the Greatest Name agree that it is “Allah,” which is the way of the Greatest Imam, Abū Ḥanīfa, Allah be pleased with him. Then, among what he called Him by: O Lord of Majesty and Generosity — as though the caller stood at two doors at once: majesty, knocked on with awe, and generosity, knocked on with hope. Al-Qushayrī says of the verse of al-Raḥmān: in His remaining, glory be to Him, there is a replacement for every loss, and a consolation for the Muslims in whatever afflicts them and whatever gifts pass them by. Whoever has lost everything, and still has the Lord of Majesty and Generosity, has lost nothing.
In their own words
He is the One to whom belongs every majesty and every perfection, and from whom proceeds every honour and every noble gift. Majesty is His in Himself, and honour overflows from Him onto His creation; and the kinds of His honouring His creation can hardly be counted or brought to an end.
Ikrām is close in meaning to inʿām, blessing, except that it is narrower: for He blesses some whom He does not honour, and honours none but those He blesses. Allah’s honouring of His servant, Mighty and Majestic is He, comes hastened in this world and deferred to the next; and for all the servant’s falling short, the Real blesses him while he complains to another, and provides for him while he serves another and asks of another.
All on the face of the earth are under the rule of passing away — as a possibility, and, by the report, as a fact: the world and all on it will pass, and your Lord’s Face, Lord of Majesty and Generosity, will remain. The Face is an attribute of Allah, glory be to Him, which reason does not prove with certainty, though it shows it possible, and which revelation reports as certain. It is said: in the Face remaining, the Essence remains, for an attribute does not stand by itself. And the point of naming the Face in particular is that everything else is known by reason, while the Face is not known by reason but by transmission and report. And in His remaining, glory be to Him, there is a replacement for every loss, and a consolation for the Muslims in whatever afflicts them and whatever gifts pass them by.
