al-Awwal
The First
Before all things; existing through Himself before all that exists — His being has no beginning, and nothing was before Him or with Him
The word
Awwal is on the pattern afʿal. Al-Qushayrī says: it is from āla, yaʾūlu; its root form is awʾal — the second hamzah was turned into a wāw, two wāws met and one was merged into the other, giving awwal; its feminine is ūlā, like akbar and kubrā. Az-Zajjājī says: the proof that it is afʿal and not fawʿal, as some grammarians held, is that it takes min — one says “I am first before so-and-so” — and min attaches only to afʿal. Az-Zajjāj says: al-Awwal is set for going before and preceding; all things came to be after Him, and He preceded them all. The name comes in the verse of al-Ḥadīd above, and in the Prophet’s ﷺ supplication at sleep: “You are the First, and there is nothing before You.”
Of Him
Al-Khaṭṭābī says: al-Awwal is the One before all things, who ever was, before creation came to be; He is owed firstness, for He existed with nothing before Him and nothing with Him — and in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: “Allah was, and there was nothing other than Him.” Al-Ḥalīmī says: al-Awwal is the One who has no “before”; for “before” and “after” are two limits, and where being has neither beginning nor end, it has no before and no after. Al-Ghazālī says: if you look to the order of being and consider the chain of existing things in their ranks, Allah is first in relation to them, for all existing things took their existence from Him, while He exists through Himself and took existence from no other. Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif: the First, for He is owed the attribute of eternity; the First, so His being has no opening; the First, without beginning; the First, not by time.
The servant’s share
Al-Qushayrī says in his Laṭāʾif: whoever is ruled by His name al-Awwal thinks on the story of what went before for him: what did his Master name him? What did He set running for him in His prior judgement — happiness or misery? The servant’s share in this name is to see every good in himself as preceded by a grace that no deed of his preceded; to know, as al-Qushayrī says in at-Taḥbīr, that were it not for Allah’s granting success and guidance first, we would never have known Him; and then to be first among people to the good — for whoever knows the First cannot bear to be late at His door.
A taste
Al-Qushayrī says in at-Taḥbīr: the First in His kindness, the First in guidance, the First in bestowing happiness; and in his Laṭāʾif: the First in His care, the First in making Himself known, the First in that He chose you. So whatever you find in your heart of turning towards Him, its beginning is from Him: He was kind to you before you obeyed Him, made Himself known to you before you knew Him, and chose you before you sought Him. Shaykh Zarrūq says: whoever knows that He is the First is absent from everything through Him. In the supplication above the servant says at his sleep — and sleep is the brother of death — that there is nothing before his Lord; so he lays down his side having returned the whole affair to the One who was before everything, and asks Him to settle his debt and free him from want: nothing can defeat the One who was before all things.
In their own words
Know that the First is first in relation to something, and the Last is last in relation to something; and the two are opposites, so a single thing cannot be conceived as first and last together from one aspect, in relation to one thing. Rather, when you look to the order of being and consider the chain of existing things in their ranks, Allah, exalted is He, is first in relation to them, for all existing things took their existence from Him, while He exists through Himself and took existence from no other.
