al-Muʾakhkhir
The One Who Puts Back
Who puts back what He wills from the time it is looked for, by a wisdom He knows; who gives respite but never neglects
The word
Muʾakhkhir is the opposite of Muqaddim: the One who sets a thing behind another, in time or in rank. Al-Ḥalīmī says: al-Muʾakhkhir is the One who keeps back from the high ranks; and he notes that this is among the names that came in reports from the Prophet ﷺ, and that Allah should not be called on by it except together with al-Muqaddim — as He is not called al-Mudhill except with al-Muʿizz, nor al-Mumīt except with al-Muḥyī. The secret of it is that the name alone may suggest a lack, while joined to its pair it tells of complete command. Al-Qushayrī says: their meaning, as His description, is His bringing some states before others and putting some after others, in time or in rank; and both are among the signs of His will and His act.
Of Him
Al-Khaṭṭābī says: He put back whom He willed from the ranks of the forerunners and held them back from them; and He puts a thing back from the time it is looked for, knowing the wisdom in how it ends. None can bring forward what He puts back, and none can put back what He brings forward. Az-Zajjāj says: al-Muʾakhkhir is the One who puts back what must be put back; and there is wisdom in all Allah does, exalted is He, even when its face is hidden from us. Al-Ghazālī says: if you trace the going ahead and falling behind of creatures to their striving and their falling short, then who moved them to strive in knowledge and worship by stirring their motives, and who moved them to fall short by turning their motives away? All of it is from Allah; He is the One who brings forward and puts back. And the servant, for all that, acquires his deeds and answers for them; and Allah is far above all wrong.
The servant’s share
Among the greatest signs of this name is respite. Al-Qushayrī says of the verse above: had He dealt with them at once as they deserved, uprooting would have come down on them; but the judgement had gone before that they be given respite. So the servant’s share is to know that punishment held back from him is not pleasure with his sin — Allah gives the wrongdoer respite until, when He seizes him, He does not let him go, as in the ḥadīth above; and to know that good he hopes for, held back from him, is not a denial — Allah puts a thing back from the time it is looked for, knowing how it ends, as al-Khaṭṭābī says. Whoever is given respite, let him turn back before he is seized; and whoever finds what he wants held back, let him be patient until it comes in its time.
A taste
For the people of taste, putting back comes in two ways: punishment put back, which is respite for the disobedient; and a gift put back, which is the training of the lover. The first calls for fear, the second for contentment. The Real may put back from His friend what he asks, to lengthen his standing at His door — so that the delay is itself a drawing near, and the asking is itself the gift. Whoever understands this from Allah never thinks an answer slow, never feels safe from His plan, and knows that everything has with Him a known measure and a set time, which it neither runs ahead of nor lags behind.
In their own words
The one brought forward with Allah, exalted is He, is the one brought near. He brought forward the angels, then the prophets, then the friends of Allah, then the scholars; and everyone behind is put back in relation to what is before him and brought forward in relation to what is after him. Allah, glory be to Him, is the One who brings forward and puts back: for if you trace their going ahead and falling behind to their striving and falling short, their perfection in qualities and their lack, then who moved them to strive in knowledge and worship by stirring their motives, and who moved them to fall short by turning their motives away from the straight path? All of that is from Allah, exalted is He; so He is the One who brings forward and puts back. What is meant is bringing forward and putting back in rank; and in it is a pointer that whoever came forward did not come forward by his knowledge and his deeds, but because Allah, Mighty and Majestic, brought him forward — and so too the one put back.
That is: had He dealt with them at once as they deserved, uprooting would have come down on them; but the judgement had gone before that they be given respite, and they will meet the outcome of their deeds in their end.
Al-Muʾakhkhir is the One who puts back what must be put back. There is wisdom and rightness in what Allah, exalted is He, does, even when the face of the wisdom and rightness in it is hidden from us.
