an-Nāfiʿ
The One Who Brings Benefit
Who fills every want and gives beyond need; the Cause of every good and the Averter of every harm — nothing benefits unless His will is joined to it
The word
Nāfiʿ is the active participle of nafaʿa, yanfaʿu; benefit is the opposite of harm. Al-Ḥalīmī says: He is the One who fills every want and gives beyond what is needed; and He may be called on by this name alone. Az-Zajjāj says: Allah, exalted be His mention, harms and benefits, gives and withholds; and what the two show together is that good and evil are in His hand, that He is the Cause of every good and the Averter of every evil, and that creation lives under His kindness, hoping for His generosity. The verse of Yūnus above tells that if He intends good for His servant, none can turn back His bounty.
Of Him
Al-Ghazālī says: all of these — the means — stand to the pre-eternal power as the pen stands to the writer in the belief of the common man; and as, when a king signs an honour or a punishment, the good or harm of it is not seen as coming from the pen but from the one the pen is subject to, so it is with every go-between and every means. Al-Khaṭṭābī says: means benefit and harm only when His will is joined to them. So medicine does not heal, food does not satisfy, knowledge does not guide and a companion does not help, unless an-Nāfiʿ grants it benefit — which is why the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from knowledge that does not benefit, as in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
The servant’s share
In the ḥadīth above: be keen on what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not give up. Keenness on what benefits is worship; seeking help from the One who benefits is tawḥīd; leaving “if only” after the decree is courtesy. Al-Qushayrī says: whoever knows that his Master alone brings things into being, alone devises them, entrusts his affairs to Him, and lives at rest while people are at rest from him; he gives sincere counsel to everyone and finds no deceit or treachery in his heart for anyone. The servant’s share in this name is to be of benefit to Allah’s servants with whatever knowledge, wealth or standing he has been given — and to know that his benefiting others is a benefit run through his hand, not from him.
A taste
Al-Khaṭṭābī says: one with no power to benefit or harm is neither hoped for nor feared. On the name an-Nāfiʿ hope hangs, and on the name aḍ-Ḍārr fear hangs, and the heart flies to its Lord on two wings. The verse of Yūnus above tells that He brings His bounty to whom He wills of His servants, and closes with His names the Forgiving, the Merciful: the greatest benefit is a forgiveness that wipes away and a mercy that overflows. Whoever wants Allah to benefit him through a thing, let him seek the benefit from Him, not from the thing; for benefit is in the hand of an-Nāfiʿ, and things are vessels He fills when He wills.
In their own words
All of these, in relation to the pre-eternal power, are like the pen in relation to the writer, in the belief of the common man; and as, when a king signs an honour or a punishment, the harm or benefit of it is not seen as coming from the pen but from the one the pen is subject to, so it is with all the other go-betweens and means.
Aḍ-Ḍārr, an-Nāfiʿ: this is as we said before of the two names we joined together — that joining them points more fully to power and perfect wisdom; and so with any two names that together convey one meaning. Allah, exalted be His mention, harms and benefits, gives and withholds; and what the two show together is that good and evil are in His hand, that He is the Cause of every good and the Averter of every evil, and that creation lives under His kindness, hoping for His generosity.
Two of His names, glory be to Him; and in their meaning is a pointer to tawḥīd: that no harm or benefit, no good or evil, reaches a servant except by His will and intent, His decree and His power. Whoever submits to His judgement lives at rest, and whoever refuses it falls into every affliction.
