The shortest way to the plain sense, and the one memorised alongside the text itself.

By transmitted report جامع البيان Al-Ṭabarī The earliest complete tafsīr — what the first generations said about each verse, with the chains given. الدر المنثور Al-Suyūṭī Nothing but transmitted reports — every narration on a verse, gathered in one place.

Weighing the opinions النكت والعيون Al-Māwardī Sets out the possible meanings of a verse as a numbered list, and weighs them. زاد المسير Ibn al-Jawzī Lays out every opinion held on a verse in a numbered list, briefly, then moves on.

Language, grammar and rulings المحرر الوجيز Ibn ʿAṭiyyah Weighs the readings and the grammar carefully, and says which he thinks is strongest and why. الجامع لأحكام القرآن Al-Qurṭubī Language, law and meaning together — the one to open when a verse carries a ruling. البحر المحيط Abū Ḥayyān The grammarian’s commentary — why a word is in the case it is in, at length. اللباب في علوم الكتاب Ibn ʿĀdil Gathers language, law and argument from the books before it into one very full reading.
